a 5 year brickwall smashed to pieces beyond repair.

Through someone else who is researching Huguenot surnames, he has taught me to always, always consider spelling variants.

My 5xgreat grandfather was Samuel Auber. He wed Elizabeth Newman in 1774 in London. He was a bachelor of Ratcliff, London and she was a spinster. I have the original marriage PR copy. It turns out they had a child before they wed.

Samuel's signature matched that of the original PR of a Samuel Auber Snr witness to another Samuel Auber wedding in 1798. This Samuel went on to be a timber merchant. He left a will in 1834 and died in October that year aged 61 so born 1773 ish.

He first wed in 1790 aged around 17 to Mary Catherine Bignou and his first childs birth in 1790 says of Giants Yard Shoreditch, the address my Samuel Auber lived at in 1793 with Elizabeth when they had their final child Joseph.

Turns out that Auber has a different spelling all along as it is a Huguenot surname. Obey is the variant. Auber, Obey Obee. This fellow member found a Samuel Obey baptism in March 1773 son of Samuel & Elizabeth Obey.

There was a James Obey baptised in 1792 son of Samuel & Mary Catherine Obey.

A Samuel Obey was born in 1750 son of Samuel & Susannah Obey at St Dunstan Stepney. I felt like hugging the man who helped me track this down.

For years an American cousin had looked through the complete plethora of PRs in London but couldnt prove the parentage of Samuel Auber. Unfortunately she passed away 3 years ago so never got to see the mystery solved.

Yes, I have also found in my notes the burial of a Susannah Auber in January 1815 in Spitalfields Christ Church, of Bethnal Green parish, aged 94. I think she is the wife of Samuel who wed her in 1743 in the Fleet Prison. Also, Samuel's son John Auber was living in Bethnal Green at the time.

Another generation of London born ancestors accountered for. Now I want to find the baptisms of Samuel and Susan. In 1743 he was of Shoreditch and she was of Spitalfields.
