Re: Hook

Searching the GRO, doesn't give that many results, about 20. Filtering out the obvious ones, you may need to purchase several. There are around 6 to 8 that may fit.

He also could have been illegtimate, which would not show his mothers maiden name in the GRO.

Steve.

Re: Hook

Quite often, if someone is illegitimate, you will find a father's name on a marriage certificate. Usually it's not their father but a made up person to save face in front of the spouse's family.

It's not a brickwall yet.

It just means you'll need to spend more money. A number of certs maybe required.
Do you have his mothers name, or haven't you found him before the 1901 census.

His mother may have remarried just after he was born, and he may well be under his step fathers name.

Steve.

Re: Hook

If you're serious about carrying the Hook family back further, you will have to bite the bullet, and buy some PDF birth certs. if nothing else works out.

It took 17 for my Great Grandfather, and that was before the PDF certs. So that was about £140 - £150 for me.

Steve.
