Exclamation Bogus family historians. ??

In the last few days, I have recieved communcations from people who are researching the same names/tree as me. Contact is always via Ancestree Message Centre.

When I've checked their family history research interests or public family history, there is none to be found.

Messages are usually as follows. 'Can I view your tree '......or, 'I would appreciate reading the story you have posted'.......and, 'I can share additional information', or all of these phrases.

My tree/s are Private, and have been for a long while.

Are these people just some sort of scammers, or what. I have no clue. Obviously they got a firm NO.!!

So, if anyone has had similar instances as me, be wary, and check them out before passing anything on to them.

Steve.

I see your point but I manage my mum's account on Ancestry, and she doesn't like any of her details being shared on the internet - so her profile is basically blank. Her trees are public though.

Re: Bogus family historians. ??

If your tree is Public, then I guess you won't be getting these messages.

Here is today's message, from someone who contacted me, after I replied to them........!!!

'I did the Ancestry DNA test so I will find lots of matches on here in the next week (when they come back).'

I am trying not to laugh.....but I'm failing miserably.

Ah yes, but my point is I contact a lot of people with private trees, even though my mum's profile is blank. Yet my inquiries aren't bogus and are just for me. I think some older members may not like their details being public online, like my mum for example. However your post has made me wonder if the blank profile is why I don't get many responses to queries to those with private trees!

Re: Bogus family historians. ??

You're right Steve, I don't get asked about anyone on my tree and I also never write to anyone with a private tree unless they are a very close match on my DNA. I'm happy having a public tree because I don't have much close family and if any of my cousin's children decided to take up the hobby, they will have a good start.

Re: Bogus family historians. ??

Members of Ances with a private tree ,may also show other trees that are public. So the one they are enquiring about maybe their private tree.I dislike the ones that have asked for details from your tree, then I search through several off their trees and it is the private one they are asking for info on. Usually refused.

Re: Bogus family historians. ??

I have to add, that all these messages have been since I cancelled my subs 2 days ago.
And it also seems odd, that I get another round of obscure hints,(and still mounting), which I never got while I had my subs in order.

Perhaps I'm getting paranoid in my old age.

I am sure that the accoutants have taken over Anc.

I made my tree Private, from the simple fact, I have many scanned copies of certs(about 50), Wills(about 15), and other original documents(too many to count), photo's etc.
Too many 'members' were simply taking my copies without even a nod to thank me. Certs alone had cost me about £400+, so why should they get them for free, without a thankyou. I will gladly share what i have, all they need to do is ask, if our families connect.

Re: Bogus family historians. ??

I never add my certs to my tree, but many of them are on ancestry anyway.

Re: Bogus family historians. ??

I keep my tree public as I am always willing to share info. My tree contains many notes underneath events explaining the connections. Not so many certs or photos on there but the tree contains many notes.

I am blowing all our trumpets but us lot on here are probably among the few who have accurate data on our trees, well as accurate as we know it to be.
