Genealogy site, emails.

Over the last month or so, I cancelled my subs to G/re-united. And on saturday, I cancelled my subs to Ancestreee.

I am now receiving all sorts of updates from both, which I hardly received in the past, and so many more family tree 'hints'.

I wonder why I'm getting these now.

Is it the cynic in me, that they want me to sign up again.

I will sign back up to one of them, but when and IF, I need to.

As I'm pretty much now into parish regs, it hardly seems worth while to rejoin until they get my areas online, and hell will freeze over before they spend money on transcribing my 'little counties'.

Steve.

Re: Genealogy site, emails.

I am also mainly into parish regs and I have pretty much exhausted all the census and BMD resources. Wills and parish regs are my next move. Luckily they have put a lot of London records but hopefully they will do Sussex, Oxfordshire and Essex and Suffolk next.

I am still subscribed to both but get emails saying "Was Sarah Smith a Victoria Bride". We found matches for John Smith.

Sorry Steve but I would be cynical also. You really need to pick the on that has the records you need, which really takes some time to figure out,

Re: Genealogy site, emails.

One little corner of Buckinghamshire is available on the 'A' site 'community', but I already have that from May Lanchbury in my favourites.

I have loads of Victorian brides, just like everyone else. As they appear in most of the census........1841 - 1901, so that just about covers them.

Oh well, time will tell if I sign up again.

Steve.

Re: Genealogy site, emails.

I think re Ancestry you are being paranoid as I am besieged with emails from them and am not about to leave them. At the moment they have what I need except all the emails which aren't usually telling me anything I need to know.

I agree there are other providers that are good too and certain ones have things that Ancestry does not. Equally there are quite a lot of good free sites.

The best idea is to team up with a couple of friends and each use a different service and that way you get a great spread of available info.

Oh no DW. I have received far more in 3 days than I have ever had, even from Ancestree.

I'm not paranoid at all. It seems coincidental maybe, but I doubt it.

Time will tell.

Re: Genealogy site, emails.

maybe they just hadn't noticed you till then. Everytime I go away I come back to an inbox stuffed with emails from Ancestry. Good if you are lonely I suppose. Its the like an online version of the sorcerers apprentice. If it gets more when I leave I will have to change email addresses.

I'm not subscribed to either of them...just have public trees and occasional free 2 week subscription on anc*****

Always get the...."is ? a Victorian Bride?" So tempted to say "NO COZ I'M AUSTRALIAN...WE WERE CONVICTS!!!"

Re: Genealogy site, emails.

When I cancelled my subs to GR...I started getting dozens of obscure matches?? for the want of a better word.
e.g. We have found 23 matches for your Susan Smith..etc
I knew they were of no use whatsoever, as I had already eliminated them, but I felt were designed to encourage me to rejoin.
I had used that particular site with great success for years,
but I had no further use for it. The emails stopped after a few days.
