James Cranfield

Hi I am Sarah, I have never been on a forum before so hello. I started researching my Family Tree last December have found a lot of information however i am now stuck and hoping that someone can help me shed some light on a James Cranfield born 1861 in London he married Mary Anne Poxon in Burton on trent on 30th December 1883, on his marriage certificate he names John Cranfield as his dad. I am unable to find a birth record for a James who's dad was John.
Many Thanks

Re: New to Forums

Hi You've got a good one here...
I have found who I think is your James on census returns from 1871 to 1911 inc.
His place of birth is different on nearly every census
1871 - Cripplegate, Msx, 1881 St Lukes, 1891 Saltley Staffs, 1901 London, and lastly Sudbury Suffolk. The last one in his own hand. This makes me think he doesn't really know where he was born, maybe he was an orphan?

If you take it he was born London, say St Lukes, there is a birth there in Dec qtr 1861 ref 1b 559. It does not give parents, but in 1871 he is with mother Lucy A aged 56 widow. So far I can't find Lucy in 1851/61, but in 1841 there is a Lucy aged 25 with a dau Mary 11months, living with Josiah and Elizabeth both 25 and their children Charles 3 and Frances 1. I presume if it is the Lucy on the 1871 cenus (ages tally), she must have been married, and sister in law to Josiah. If not married in 41 then I don't see how she could have been a widow with the name Cranfield in 71.

I'll keep looking for his birth, as if in London, it should be on line.

dave

Re: New to Forums

Wow - Hi

probably all just rubbish as nowhere is there a John (James's father)
From what I found
1881 to 1891 is where James moves from London to Burton
In 1881 James 19 is lodging in Edmonton, he is a printer
In 1871 we have James aged 9 living with widowed mother Lucy who is a Box Maker
In 1861 Lucy 40? a cloth cap maker, married but not with husband, has dau Ann 17 a fancy box maker
1851 Lucy recorded as Louisa 36 cloth cap maker with dau Ann
1841 Lucy 25 with child Mary 11 weeks or months

there is a birth of Mary Lucy jul qtr 1840 in Christ Church, London to a Richard and Lucy Ann - so is Lucy married to Richard

1841 Richard 30 is with Mary 25 and child Sarah 7 and Juliet 5
1851 Richard 38 is with wife Mary 36 Sarah 17 and Mary 9. Richard is a Printers journeyman
1861 Richard is still with Mary, and daugs Juliet and Mary.
1871 I can't see any of them, and Lucy is now a Widow.
Is Richard living a double life and is Mary aged 9 the mary who was with Lucy aged 11weeks/months

If you can't find any of the census records just ask.
