MR. ROBERT GILLIES.
Mr Robert Gillies who died al his home Selbourne street Burwood on Thursday aged BO years had been for 30 years connected with the Starr-Bowkett societies at Burwood Ash- field and Rose Bay as secretary Mr Gillies was secretary of the Western Suburbs Hospi- tal for some years and secretary and auditor of the committee of management of the Bur- wood Presbyterian Church He was piesl dent of the Burwood Progress Association In his eaily days he took a keen interest in poll tics and was campaign secretary for the late Mr Bruce Smith when he entered the first redorai Parliament
Bom in Irvine Ayrshire Scotland Mr Gillies in his early years was employed by the London Bank of Brazil at Pernambuca and Bania Brazil and later set up business in Liverpool England as a rubber merchant but owing to ill-health came to New South Wales In 1895 he became a biscuit manufacturer at the Argyll Biscuit Tactory Millers Point and carried on the business until The Rocks re- sumptions by the Government when he settled in Burwood and devoted his energies to Starr Bowkett societies He Is survived by the widow three sons and three daughters
The remains were cremated at Rookwood yesterday The Rev J B Galloway Presby- terian minister at Burwood conducted ser- vices at the home and the Crematorium
The chief mourners were Messrs Ronald and -rank Gillies (sons! Neuman Kins mid C Q Lcsslie Isons in law)
