Savernake Forest.

Is just outside of Marlborough about 10 miles south of Swindon,Marlborough is a nice little town with historic teaching links(Marlborough School)and a fine golf course
This old relic i drive past many a time and is somewhat taken for granted now(pic below)...believed to be over a thousand years old it has a metal support and the Royal hunt was known to be a big user of this forest when most of the trees would have been oak like this beauty.
The road south will see you reach Burbage and its lovely canal and onto Tidworth and Salisbury although Savernake Forest itself ends around ware it meets the canal in Burbage.
I didn't take this pic as it is a dangerous road to stop on....but lets hope this blast from the past is standing for many years to come....the tree that is not me

Re: Savernake Forest.

This tree is called The Big-Bellied Oak. Our beloved forest (26 square miles) has very many ancient oaks and a beautiful avenue of beeches.
Marlborough had been around for 1000 years before Marlborough College, which is a top public school educating the children of the rich and famous.

Re: Savernake Forest.

It has a darned fine tea rooms as well does Marlborough, though why the need for a big tesco's up the road from the High Street shops means they will suffer the consequences soon, especially the butchers...shocking decision to let them build it.

Re: Savernake Forest.

It's only a small Tesco and came here after a campaign to bring an alternative to Waitrose. Not everyone in Marlborough is well-off. Actually, all the poor people who used to drive to Asda or Tesco in Swindon still do, so maybe our Tesco will close down. Hurrah!

Re: Savernake Forest.

Well whatever in my opinion Supermarkets are ruining our small towns like Marlborough, not only ruining small traders but causing travel chaos in some places....also the buildings are just darned ugly with no thought of the surrounding areas....plus they are rude and have no thought for the drivers like myself who deliver to there warehouses,no toilets, washrooms or somewhere to grab a coffee.
Well Apricot you can probably tell Supermarkets are not my thing
But it is true to say that Marlborough is still a lovely old Wiltshire town.
