Hagan/Watson

Hello

Just got the family history bug and spent ages this weekend checking out information, now I am asking for some help! I'm a bit stuck looking for a Patrick Hagan, born in Ireland 1831, living in West Derby, Lancs in 1860s, with Francis Hagan, age 20, b 1861 (my great grandfather) and one other son (Thomas Hagan, between 6 and 8 born 1865, possibly in an industrial school in Liverpool).

I will look through forums and hopefully be able to help someone else, it'd be great if someone could help me as well.

thanks
Denise

Re: Hagan/Watson

Hi Denise,

In the 1881 census, he appears to be from Ballimore. That could be Ballinamore, County Leitrim.

If you look at the entry, there are a others who are from Cavan...which also isn't far away from Ballinamore.

BUT........it also could be Balli(y)mote, County Sligo.

And being a Sailor doesn't help, but Ballymote is nearer the sea.

Steve.

Re: Hagan/Watson

Thanks for that, that's useful about the different spellings, I'll check those out, I think he came to Liverpool, maybe because of being a sailor? He's possibly shown as a 'nail maker' in his 20s's in Liverpool, but it's hard to know if I'm on the right tracks.

thanks for your help.

Re: Hagan/Watson

Hi

I notice on the 1881 census, Francis is deaf and with his widowed dad.
On 1891 census he is a Marine Fireman. Bearing in mind ships were powered by steam, he must have shovelled coal!!. He was also married.
I can't see Thomas on the returns.

Hi

Thanks for this, but this is where it is strange and I'm unsure I'm looking at the right person, as Francis is my great grandad and he moved to Durham and was married in the 1891 census, so maybe this is the wrong Patrick? I hope to order Francis birth cert to check out his parent's names as maybe it isn't Patrick. I can't find Thomas either, the only place I see him is in the industrial school. Both Francis and Thomas were born in Whitehaven. I've missed the marine fireman, sounds interesting!

I could spend all day doing this, but unfortunately have to work!

Re: Hagan/Watson

Hi Denise
I'm not convinced the info I found is correct.
I think the info I have on 1891 census is ok
Francis 29 Whitehaven, Coal Miner
Mary 26 Ireland
Thomas 4 Spennymoor
Francis 2 Shilden
Bridget A 6m Towlaw.

Have you any proof Francis's father was Patrick?
Have you a census record with Thomas's birthplace as Whitehaven?
Could these be your family
1871
Thomas 35 Ireland Coal Miner
Alice 34 Ireland
Patrick 15 Sunderland Blacksmith
Thomas 12 Sunderland Coal Miner
Fancis 7 Sunderland Boy Miner

I can also find this family in 1861, living in Sunderland.

Re: Hagan/Watson

Hi Dave

Thanks so much for the reply.

Yes I think the 1891 one is correct as that ties in with a family bible, names and dates of the children and parents.

There is a Francis Hagan registered in Whitehaven in 1861 and that is the place that the family say he was born, there is also a Thomas living in Tow Law, almost next door, at 27 yrs old (when Francis is 29) and he shows as registered birth in Whitehaven in 1864. Francis shows as 20 living with Patrick in West Derby on 1861 census, but I'm not sure if this is the right one as I can't find Thomas with them but do see a Thomas in an industrial school, but not sure if it is the right one. I didn't find the other names you mention from 1871.

I am sending off for Francis's birth certificate (this family history lark is expensive isn't it?!, I didn't realise a certificate would cost so much) but I hope to confirm his parents' names so that will help.

I'm starting to realise how easy it is to go off on the wrong tangent, so the help and advice from this site is fantastic.

Denise
