Question Arthur and Jabez Palmer

Hi all,

Have tried to look for both of the above who fought and died during the First World War but with no luck finding either.

I don't know anything about their regiment or service numbers etc however, despite lack of such info I have previously found details of my Granddad's brother who was killed in WW1.

Arthur was born in 1887, Cambridgeshire and Jabez a year later in Hoxton (Shoreditch area of London). Arthur was a kitchen porter, Jabez a wire worker and their parents were Jabez & Grace.

Any ideas on how to find out about both of their service records?

Much appreciated
Christine

Re: Arthur and Jabez Palmer

Have you tried the national archives site. I had a look and found 2 Jabez Palmer's medal cards.

1. Jabez Palmer Private regiment number 422217 Labour Corps
Private regiment number 28364 Manchester Regiment

2. Jabez Palmer Private regiment number 35018 Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

I tried looking for a Arthur Palmer but there were acouple of hundred with the same name.

Ancestry.com site has militery records but i am unable to access them as ia m not a paid member. As im still learning at this research thing i hope i have not given you misleading info. good luck and hope the above helps/

Re: Arthur and Jabez Palmer

Hi gibbo,

It is possible that either of them could be the Jabez Palmer that I am looking for so thanks for that! Yes I suppose Arthur is a bit more of a common name than Jabez so it will be more difficult to find.

Thanks again,
Chris

Just a longshot but Jabez is a Jewish name and the records might be easier to find if he was in a Jewish regiment....if he was Jewish then almost certainly would have been in a Jewish reg....hopefully one of the experts can pick the bones on this link.

PS..as a side note the name Jabez is hebrew for pain.

Re: Arthur and Jabez Palmer

Ancestry only has one Medal Index Card, for the Jabez who was in the Manchester Regt and then the Labour Corps. Usually men went into the Labour Corps after they were declared unfit for further front-line service, after wounding etc. This would imply that this individual survived the war. He's not in the list of Soldiers who Died in the Great War, neither does he have a grave tended by the CWGC, so my guess is that he made it through to 1919. There's no indication of the chap from the RWF on SDGW or CWGC, either. The RWF service number is quite high, so he may not have volunteered in the first flush of enthusiasm. That means, insted of going to a local unit, he was put where he was needed.

I couldn't find him in the pension records, and most (2/3) of the service records were destroyed in WWII, so it's going to be challenging from here onwards.

Of course, he could have been in the Navy (although not the RN division, because he's not on their casualty list, either).

Leefer, there are no Jewish regiments in the British Army.

This is where to start a search:

Re: Arthur and Jabez Palmer

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your help and all the info that you have given me.

I will speak to my mother in law to see if she can find out from someone that might knows who Arthur and Jabez served with.

Cheers for now.

Christine
