Re: Hing family

All

Thank for the response. Let me take it one at a time:

* Was Harrys wifes name Aletta Pretronella Maria Eloff? Yes it was, juliejtp, I have the marriage certificate. The marriage certificate says he was "about" 27 when they were married in 1913
* As far as I can tell from speaking to family, Harry's mothers name was Eileen O'Neill, she was Irish.
* My grandmother and Harry had 7 children all born in SA.

Thanks

Re: Hing family

Hi,

The marriage is on the familysearch site. Harry’s race is given as Chinese.

China and Bristol are a long way apart. It may have been helpful if you had told us his origins from the outset.

Anyway, good luck and good hunting.

Steve.

Yes. I understand now. If you had mentioned that in your first message, it may have helped.

Looking forward to seeing how it all pans out.

Re: Hing family

The largest Chinese community at the time you're looking at, was in Liverpool. Highly likely to have come from there, unless you have documented evidence that he was born in Bristol? Many Chinese/Irish or Chinese/British couples cohabited instead of marrying - to protect the female partner's citizenship. Not all of those records are available online, particularly Roman Catholic records.

Your grandfather has no UK records available online and there is no Harry Hing listed in Bristol at the time. Many Chinese families anglicised their names.

The South African archives (NAAIRS online) has 2 documents available relating to a Harry Hing (Chinaman). You would need to visit an archive depot or order it. It may provide a further clue for you, if you don't already have it. The only document relating to him on Family Search is the marriage you mentioned. Have checked UK births and marriages on various sites (including paid sites) for you but can find no info relating to an O'Neill/Hing marriage or to your Harry's birth.
