Re: LEWTON / LEAR puzzle

Hello Tracey,

Thanks for telling me the address was the same. I agree it's the same family. Elizabeth and James as LEAR before they married with sibling George as HODGES, who in 1851 is LEWTON:

Quote:
1851
George Lewton
Age: 36
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1815
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Elizabeth
Gender: Male
Where born: Bitton, Gloucestershire, England
Civil Parish: Devizes St James
County/Island: Wiltshire
Country: England
Street address: nursery
Occupation: coach builder
Registration district: Devizes
Sub registration district: Bishops Cannings
Household schedule number: 125
Household Members: Name Age
George Lewton 36
Elizabeth Lewton 36
Elizabeth Lewton 13
One thing I've not yet done is to check what happened to George junior. He is not on the shipping record with the other three.

This one is not my James:

Quote:
1841

Registration District: Keynsham
Sub District: Oldland
Civil Parish: Bitton
Address: Near Hanham, Bitton, Oldland Gloucestershire
LEAR, James M 20 1821 Gloucestershire occ Lab
LEAR, Ann F 20 1821 Gloucestershire
Also listed on the same page but a couple of dwellings away is a Mary Lear age 70

Dave

Re: LEWTON / LEAR puzzle

Hello cp,

Yes.

It's not entirely what I expected when I started this topic.

I has fallen into place and a with a bit of money and some certificates I'll have this line almost completely sorted out. Still a bit to do though.

Regards,

Dave

Re: LEWTON / LEAR puzzle

Hello Tracey,

I would certainly be interested but not sure I'd have much success with the resources currently available to me.

Very few branches of my tree go back into 1700s and those that do are stuck at a burial with no sign of the marriage, or stuck at a marriage with no baptism and no known parents and no burial.

Are the two Aaron LUTONs baptised at Siston in 1798 totally separate? I ask because some of my LEWTONs appear in shipping records as LUTON so it's not as if we can automatically exclude those with the LUTON spelling.

What about this family?

1818 Luton Ann Mother bitton mf 1243. r Non-conformist
1818 Luton Aaron Father bitton mf 1243. r Non-conformist
1818 Luton Elizabeth Child bitton mf 1243. r Non-conformist

Regards,

Dave

Re: LEWTON / LEAR puzzle

Hello Tracey,

I initially thought my Aaron LEWTON was one of these:

Aaron LUTON - Siston, Siston, Gloucester, England
c. 19 Aug 1798 - William & Sarah
c. 25 Nov 1798 - Aaron & Martha

One married Hannah and children including Matilda & Rachel born in Siston. The other married Ann.

The more I look the more I find, such as these:

1841
Civil parish: Siston
Hundred: Puckle Church
County/Island: Gloucestershire
Country: England
Registration district: Keynsham
Sub-registration district: Bitton
Address: Siston Common, Siston
STONE, James M 60 1781 Gloucestershire
KING, Ziporah F 65 1776 Gloucestershire
LEAR, James M 15 1826 Gloucestershire Ag Lab

1841
Civil parish: Bitton
Hundred: Langley and Swinehead (Upper Division)
County/Island: Gloucestershire
Country: England
Registration district: Keynsham
Sub-registration district: Bitton
Address: Cadbury Heath, Bitton, Oldland
WEST, Roger M 60 1781
WEST, Sarah F 50 1791
WEST, Sarahann F 7 1834
LEAR, John M 15 1826 Gloucestershire
LEAR, Joseph M 15 1826 Gloucestershire

Re: LEWTON / LEAR puzzle

Hello Dave,
Most surnames had several spellings in Bitton/Hanham parish registers in the 1700's and 1800's, so the Lutton's are likely to be related.

The following probably isn't of much use to you at the moment, but it may start to fit when you get further back:

There is a will of Richard LEWTON Oct 17 1763,horsedriver,hamlet of Oldland.

to son Aaron LEWTON 23 pounds

to son William LEWTON the house
or to Williams children: John
William
Hannah

mentions his late son Richard LEWTON
and his children Aaron, Richard and William

This is an extract from an email I recieved about LEWTONs :
"..There are some LEWTON headstones at Bitton church:
[Upper case] In memory of AMBROSE LEWTON, of this parish, who died
20th March 178[?]6.
Also SARAH his wife died April 26[?] 1785 [?] aged 50 years.
Also lieth the body of MARY wife of AMBROSE LEWTON JUN who died 1-
Sept 1908 Aged 37 years
[Upper case] In memory of AMBROSE LEWTON, of this parish, who died
20th March 178[?]6.
Also SARAH his wife died April 26[?] 1785 [?] aged 50 years.
Also lieth the body of MARY wife of AMBROSE LEWTON JUN who died 1-
Sept 1908 Aged 37 years
[Some difficulty of reading there, especially in the snow!]

On a small headstone I managed to decipher from a mostly illegible text:
Aaron Lewton 1820 [?]
William Lewton 1829 [?]
"

I noticed that Mary Lear married James White on 8 August 1784 in Bitton. (the same day and place that Ann Lear married William Lewton) - Mary may possibly be Ann's Sister. Also William and Ann baptised Aaron on the Same day and at the same place as John and Jane Lear baptised Stephen.
see:
http://www.leargenes.com/html/john___jane_lear_.html

It could be coincidence or John could be a brother of Ann's.

The BAFHs burial index shows an Anne Lewton, aged 92 was buried at Hanham on 10th Nov 1859, but I'm not sure if this is your Ann Lewton.

I haven't found a baptism record for Ann Lear, but she may have been baptised with a different surname.

Regards

Tracey
