alexander somerville

Alexander Somerville and Ellen White married about 1848 in or around Lambeth but so far have been unable to find a marriage.
I know some people just didn't marry, I have traced all 4 children on the GRO and mothers MMN is White - so have the correct pair(I think)

Any ideas!

Re: alexander somerville

What makes you say they married in Lambeth? They didn't necessarily have to marry in the place they had their children. Also Ellen may have been a widow when they married therefore her name wouldn't have been White.

Re: alexander somerville

Very true Emeltee but I don't think she had time to marry someone else in 1841 census she is living in Lambeth and is 13. So I reasoned she could have married in 1844 and first child with Alexander is in Sep quarter 1849.
On the 1851 census she puts her place of birth as Toll House Hill Nottingham - I found a birth for Ellen White baptised 4 mar 1828 living at Toll House Hill Nottingham - So correct Ellen.
There are no Alexander marriages that come near.

Re: alexander somerville

That's fair enough but I was just surmising seeing as no ages or dob were noted in your query. I was trying to think why the marriage couldn't be found unless it is one of those which has been missed when the index was made.

Re: alexander somerville

the bit I don't get is that they had all 4 children registered but no marriage record.
Must have fallen through the net

Re: alexander somerville

Hi Pter,

I see that there is a Jane White age 9 visitor born Southwark with the family in 1851. Have you tried tracing her?.

Re: alexander somerville

Traced Jane on 1861 census - but no help - working as a servant.
Plus there are a lot of Jane White's
