Thanks for the Welcome Dave.
I have had contact with a direct descendant of Russel Dowling Harris and she was as surprised as I was at the info on this thread - we are hoping this is the answer for us as to what happened to Jessie - whether she married James or not is a mystery. Seems as though all may not have been a bed of roses in that relationship - by the way, her grandmother Mary Ann McCash was from Perthshire, so maybe that is part of the reason they went to Scotland. Mary Ann and William would have been free by 1850 so there would be not need to seek permission to marry.
Whatever the reasons I do hope this is our Jessie as it would be nice to think she did not meet with foul play when when she disappeared from the train.

Hi Dave,
being new here I just don't know how to go about this, my contact re: Jessie Harris is a third cousin on my Harris-McCash line. She has emailed me and asked how she can get in touch with you, as she is not a member of the forum,
how do we go about that, as she is a direct descendant of Russell Dowling Harris she is most interested in this information you have turned up.

hi Dave,
have located a death for Lydia Isabella Fleming
d. Redfern 1930/1950
Perhaps she and James never divorced so James waited till after she had passed to marry Jessie.
This is the only reason I can think of.

Well obviously Lydia never remarried so that would probably be the reason - they never divorced hence the late marriage for James and our Jessie.
The address at Todman Ave. is a block of flats now, had an Aunt live in Todman Ave. many years ago, opposite W.D. & H.O. Wills.
some wonderful old homes have been pulled down to make way for higher density housing by the look of it.
