Martha Hyatt born Gloucestershire

Looking for a birth/baptism for a Martha Hyatt/Hiatt somewhere in Gloucestershire 1805-1815. She married Thomas Daniel Drake Archer in Cheltenham in 1833 using the name Patty which I believe is a derivative/nickname for Martha.

Fom the 1851 Census she gives a place of birth as Cheltenham and a birth year of 1813 but as she was in the Cheltenham Workhouse at the time I'm not 100% sure how reliable that is.

I do know that she is not the one born 1810 in Willersley as I have found her in later Censuses. My Martha died in the Workhouse in the 1850's.

I can't find her, or her children Jane b. 1835, Thomas b. 1838 and Annie Maria b. 1840 in Cheltenham, anywhere in 1841 although husband Thomas was in Southampton, which is where their next child was born in 1843. Perhaps the family were on route to Southampton and somehow avoided the Census.

If anyone can help me over this brickwall I'd be very grateful.

Re: Martha Hyatt born Gloucestershire

Mary Ann's Bap not much help, interesting that her mother is calling herself Martha and not Patty..

If you haven't anything else on Mary Ann, this may be her in 1861:

County: Gloucestershire
RD: Stroud
Sub-RD: Bisley
ED: 10; Piece: 1773; Folio: 114; Page: 13

Mary A Archer 17 lodger [b. South Hampton, sic. Silk worker]
Lodging with 3 others at the Badway household.

Re: Martha Hyatt born Gloucestershire

The 1851 census image is difficult to make out, but it looks as though she says she is still married. No obvious sign of other family

If she became a pauper in Hampshire she may have had to return to her birth parish. Mary Ann was b. in Hampshire

Yeah... messy

If anyone is using Anc. she is transcribed as Martha 'Secher'.

Re: Martha Hyatt born Gloucestershire

Just checked the Bap Index 1813-1837, not in there.

Another look at marriage image, it doesn't say she needed consent so probably of full age, which may account for not being in the above. Also a Joseph Hiatt was a witness if you haven't seen it..

There are a number of Hiatt/Hyatt in the index..

Re: Martha Hyatt born Gloucestershire

Many thanks Geoff. I haven't seen the actual image of the marriage si was unaware of the Joseph Hiatt.

You are also correct about daughter Mary Ann in the 1861 Census.

It's one of those complicated family things - Annie Maria was my gt gt grandmother, born 1840 and died 1867. After her death Mary Ann moved in to care for the children and ended up marrying my gt gt grandfather. I think that marrying your dead wife's sister wasn't legal at that time!

I also have no idea what went wrong with Thomas and Martha's marriage. They moved from Cheltenham to Southampton in the 1840's but by the 1850's Martha and the children were back in Cheltenham in the Workhouse and Thomas seems to have moved to London. he died 1865 in Marylebone Workhouse.

Thanks for looking for me.

Re: Martha Hyatt born Gloucestershire

Yeah, a lot sadness and hardship there, EM... I for one would never judge or condemn happenings in those times.. I guess they had to make the best of what they had..

Would you like a copy of the cert. sending?

Re: Martha Hyatt born Gloucestershire

The original marriage is on Ancestry, Thomas signed but Martha/Patty Used her mark.
The witnesses were Joseph Hiatt who signed and Jane Baylis who again used her mark. Still looking for a likely baptism, doesn't look as though it was in Gloucestershire can't find it in the records.
