Mary Glave of Cheshire

John and Elisabeth Glave of Bramall in Cheshire had a football team of children baptised at Dean Row Unitarian Church between 1770 and 1794.

To save anyone wasting time looking them up they are as follows, in order of appearance

Henry 1770
John 1773
William 1775 - 1775
William 1776
Betty 1779
Martha 1781
Samuel 1783
Joshua 1785
Philip 1788
Isaac 1790
Jasper 1794

All the baptisms give abode as Bramall except for Philip and Isaac when it is Woodford and all have the surname Glave except for Philip, Isaac and Jasper whose surname is written as Gleave.

Father John is buried at Stockport St Mary as John Gleave in 1817.

In his Will he names all his children (which is how I know I've got the right John Gleave) but he also mentions one I cannot find at all. He mentions a daughter Mary Rosthern. At a guess I would say Rosthern is her married name but I cannot find a marriage.

John's burial in 1817 gives his age as 77 which gives a birth year of c1740 but I cannot find a baptism. Nor can I find a death for his wife Elisabeth/Betty. As she is not mentioned in his will she must have died before 1817.

Finally I have been unable to find a marriage for John and Elisabeth either.

Any one out there with any ideas?

Re: Mary Glave of Cheshire

There is a birth and baptism for a Mary Glave on FMP:

Gender Female
Birth date 28 Apr 1774
Baptism date 26 Jun 1774
Father's first name John
Father's last name Glave

I wonder if mother Mary was recorded wrong

Re: Mary Glave of Cheshire

Thanks Geoff. I had seen that marriage but discounted it because of it being in Lancashire. I thought 'too far away' However, as the crow flies, it's only about 13 miles away so definitely a possible. Not that the marriage lasted long as I have come across a burial in Prestwich for a Henry Rosthern in 1793!

As to the two burials, the 1810 one is for the daughter of Henry, John and Elizabeth's son. The 1809 NBI entry is a possible but the burial does not appear in the PRs for St Marys, Stockport so something is wrong somewhere.

Thanks Amanda. I don't think the baptism for Mary Glave in 1774 is correct as the original entry gives John and Mary's abode as Morley while my John and Elizabeth were living in Bramall at that time as son John bapt 1773 says Bramall as does son William bapt 1775.

The 1804 death for Elizabeth looks interesting but I would like to see what it says on the original entry.

I have seen both those marriages - the one to Elizabeth Spakeman took place in Winwick, near Warrington and the one to Elizabeth Broom gives no clues either. I actually discounted them as I cannot find any children born to John and Elizabeth until Henry turns up in 1770 and as they produced 11 children in 24 years (12 if you count the elusive Mary) the 9 year gap seems suspect.

Thanks to you both for looking for me.

Re: Mary Glave of Cheshire

Geoff, you were spot on with the NBI entry for the death of Elizabeth Gleave in 1809. I went back and re-checked the images of the PR and hadn't noticed that for March 1809 the dates ran from the 1st to the 30th then started again at the 1st. There she was Elizabeth wife of John Gleave of Bramall.

Well that's one query answered, thanks.
