Re: William GILCHRIST

I think I have my direct line of Pollocks straight, it is just the Gilchrist family that is a problem. John Pollock definitely married JEAN Snodgrass; their grandchildren, the children of Robert Snodgrass Pollock and Mary Gilchrist, were: Christina Arrol, 1873; Jean Snodgrass, 1875; Andrew, 1876; John, 1879; Robert Snodgrass, 1880; William Gilchrist, 1884; James Dickson, 1886; Mary Gilchrist, 1890. The naming pattern is not followed completely, but those are definitely the names and dates. James Dickson was named after his father's brother-in-law in Greenock. The father of John Pollock senior was Andrew Pollock, so the first son must have been named after him.

On the death certificate of Mary Gilchrist Pollock, Robert Snodgrass Pollock's wife, her birthdate is given as December 1851 and birthplace just as "Scotland". Her father's name is given as William Gilchrist and her mother's name as Mary Gilchrist, which I am sure is a mistake. Since her mother, Christina Arrol, died while Mary was very young, maybe Mary's son who gave the information for the certificate, did not know her name and just guessed.
