Paley Family

Hi Everyone,
I am new here. Hoping someone can help me locate any information on my 3rd great grandfather John Paley. (b. 1825-1830--d. August 7, 1890 in Albany, NY). I am not sure where he was born--the little I have found just says Ireland. While there are some paley's in Ireland I am unable to find him there. Since Paley is an English name I'm wondering if he really came from somewhere in England I do not know his parents or siblings. I have not been able to find a marriage certificate or date for when he married Jane Carlisle (daughter of James Carlisle and Phoebe Norwood). I also have been unable to find when he came to the USA. This has been a brick wall for me for over 20 years. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, Jennifer

Re: Paley Family

Hello and to the Forum.

Irish records before mid 1860s are very hit and miss with so many lost in the fire in 1922.

Members here should be able to fill in some of the gaps for you.

Re: Paley Family

If he was born in England we are going to need a county. There were at least 6 spelt with a y and one spelt with an I, there could be others.

Re: Paley Family

Hi Amanda,
Thank you for your reply. I have no idea what county he would have come from. From my research it seems that most paley's came from Yorkshire or giggleswick?
Thanks,
jen

Re: Paley Family

Hi Jen

As John is living with Irish people surrounding him in the census he is more likely to be Irish in my opinion. Have you looked for other Paleys in the same area in case he has a brother nearby?

There is a John Pally coming to Boston on Frank Pierce in 1853 who is Irish and aged 23 but nothing else to say it is him.

Think marriage would be biggest help but not sure how you can find the American marriage.

Do you know where in Ireland Jane came from?

Re: Paley Family

Albany Rural Cemetery Burial recods for John Paley has b Ireland died 7 Aug 1890 age 59 yrs 1 month & 27 days also buried in lot of Elizabeth McNaughton – 374 sectione 105

Louis N Paley was informant on brother John Paley b 1862 b NY (age 53 yrs when he died 23 Oct 1915) which has father John Paley b Ireland & mother Jane Carlisle b Scotland

Elizabeth W Paley b 1853 NY – 29 Aug 1927 Albany - married William McNaughton btw 1875 & 1879

How confusing can this family be…. 1900 US census for Elizabeth McNaughton nee Paley has her born NY and father born Canada & Mum b Ireland and Elizabeth married in 1877

Re: Paley Family

Looks like Louis def thought his mother was born Scotland but she says Ireland in every census too and the ship records you have found go with that.

There seem to be a few John Paleys with various spellings but nothing concrete

This in naturalisation records
John Pelley
