Laughlan in Scotland

I am looking for a William Laughland (spelt several different ways, even Lauchline) who although born in Drumachose, Co. Derry Ireland on 15 April 1827, lived in Paisley Renf area. I have him in 1861 as a miners labourer with a son aged 10 (by this time he was married to someone else and had younger children).

So looking for William with a wife (possibly Elizabeth) and son Samuel in 1851. Samuel supposedly 10 in 1861 but that may have just been to the nearest 5 or 10 years (I cant find his birth).

Looking also for William in 1841 when he'd have been 13/14 (His parents in turn were William Laughlan and Jane Stewart, who would both have been approx 41, and were married in 1826.

I don't have this family in the 1851 census, as Idon't know when this Wililam Laughlan died, I just know that Jane Laughlan (nee Stewart) was deceased by 1855.

Re: Laughlan in Scotland

Dave would it help that Samuel supposedly born around 1850 (10 in 1861) in Barony, Lanarkshire, Glasgow and that they were living there, and not Paisley at that time?

Re: Laughlan in Scotland

I will search for Samuel's birth/baptism first.

A search in SP 1849 - 1851 Lanark for a Samuel with father = William 10 hits only one with a surname starting with 'L' = Lang.

Searching in Lanark for a married William born Ireland 1827 +/- 5 285 hits - still looking at them

Re: Laughlan in Scotland

Wow - that's looking good - Samuel born Jan 1851, and Willliam actually did marry Elizabeth.

I guess Samuel if he was still alive, was on his own in 1871. I would actually purchase his birth cert and his mother's marriage if I could find them - and death, tho that will be hard.

Thanks Dave

Re: Laughlan in Scotland

There is no sign of Samuel's birth on SP that I can see.

Searching for a death for Samuel so far turns up this one:

Death 1901 Samuel LAUGHLAND Lanark Age 23

I can't see the marriage for William.

Re: Laughlan in Scotland

Hi Geoff, that is the one. William Laughlan married Jane Grieve on 16th October 1855 in St Patricks, Partick, Renfrew. Jane was 23 at the time, and William 28.

As mentioned earlier, in the 1861 census shows
Census of Scotland 1861 shows that
William Laughland lived at 8 Moncrieff St, Paisley aged 33 (Miners Labourer), born in Ireland,
Jane, aged 26 born Renfrewshire, Paisley,
Samuel, Son aged 10, (Scholar), born Lanarkshire, Glasgow,
William John, Son aged 2, born Auchinleck, Ayrshire and
George Laughland, Son aged 6 months) born Paisley, Renfrewshire, Therefore William must have been born in Ireland in 1828, Jane in Paisley in 1835.

Just wondering perhaps if Jane actually did have the son Samuel in 1851, when she was 18
