Re: Bustin of Wolvercote Oxfordshire.

Thank you everyone, This one has had me confused as some trees say Sophia was Constable and others Roberson/Robinson which was my first instinct, Just wish I could find the marriage to send for the Certificate. Can't understand why Thos or Thomas Bustin 1819 - 1880 is missing from the census of 1841 and 1861, Was it because he was a boatman on the canals and mobile?

Re: Bustin of Wolvercote Oxfordshire.

Sorry, I missed the part that he was a boatman.

This maybe a reason he is missing from Census records, it also could be the reason his marriage is difficult to find, depending on how far he travelled.

Could Sophia Roberson/Robinson have married before, to a Mr. Constable, therefore the confusion.

I'd check for the births(GRO. for mothers maiden name) and baptisms of the other children, as they seem to be online to view.

Then maybe you can narrow down the year of marriage. I'm not sure where Thomas Bustin would have plied his trade, or what waterways are available locally. But there seems to be a Canal close by, and the River Thames, plus other waterways. Could they have married in London, or any places on the routes of the Canal or River.

Oh yes. OxFHS could do a Church marriage search for you. I think its 1.50....not sure about that. If it never occurred in Oxfordshire, then at least you will know to look elsewhere. I doubt it covers Registry Office marriages.

Good luck Gwen, at least you are some steps closer to finding out.

Steve.

Re: Bustin of Wolvercote Oxfordshire.

I can see the baptisms in the OxFHS Wolvercote PR's. CD. for Thomas & Sophia.

Richard Bustin - 6 Dec 1840.
Sophia Bustin - 6 Nov 1842.
Julia Bustin - 1 Oct 1848.

But as for Birth regs....no chance.

Steve.

Re: Bustin of Wolvercote Oxfordshire.

I have a feeling his cargo would have been coal as Thos mother Elizabeth, a Widow was a coal merchant, also I believe that the Boatmen of Oxford had their own church Known as the "Floating Chapel" maybe this is where the marriage of Thos Bustin and Sophiah Roberson took place? There appears to have been trouble between the men of Oxford and the Boatmen of Woolvercote in 1837 according to a book by Mary Prior "Fisher Row" maybe this is why I cannot find Thos (Thomas) Bustin and Sophiah Robeson in 1841, also if religion was not so important to these people maybe there was no marriage just that Sophiah just took Thomas's name, what do you think?

Re: Bustin of Wolvercote Oxfordshire.

Yes......they may have married elsewhere, or not at all.

Now here is something strange, and I think we've been here before Gwen.

There is another Thomas Bustin b.1834. St. Giles, Oxford. Wife, Sophia, b.1826, Abingdon, Berkshire.

Is the marriage in 1852, Oxford, for This Thomas Bustin & Sophia Constable.

At Wolvercote.

Thomas Edward Bustin - 31 March 1861, son of Thomas & Sophia, Labourer.
Kat Bustin - 23 Nov 1856. daughter of Thoams & Sophia.....Dealer in Coal.

BUSTIN, THOMAS EDWARD. mmn. ROBINSON.
GRO Reference: 1861 M Quarter in WOODSTOCK UNION Volume 03A Page 566
BUSTIN, KATE. mmn. ROBINSON.
GRO Reference: 1856 D Quarter in WOODSTOCK UNION Volume 03A Page 536

1851 census. @ Oxford St Pauls, Oxford.

Visitor to Richard Weller. Sophia Constable, 1825, Abingdon, Berkshire(House Maid). and William Bustin c1836, Oxfordshire. Down as House servant.(Mother nurse, out.)

If this is right, then that means the other Thomas & Sophia's marriage is elswhere.

I think I'm a bit slow picking this up, and it's all getting rather twisted.....

Steve.

Or it could be I am chasing my tail and getting it all wrong, lol. So wish gt gt granddad was alive to ask him where he was in 1841 and where he got married (If) lol. have you access to my tree on ancestry?

In 1851 Census they are all living with Elizabeth Thomas's Mother and Sophia is given as Wife to Thomas and son Charles is also listed together with Richard, Sophiah, Henry, Julia, and Hellen.

Re: Bustin of Wolvercote Oxfordshire.

1841 Census.

Sophia Constable
Age: 12
abt 1829
Civil Parish: Kelvedon
Hundred: Witham
Essex.
Regi. dist. Witham
Sub-registration district: Kelvedon
Piece: 343
Book: 9
Folio: 11
Page. 16

James Constable 65. Merchant.
Susan Constable 40
Sophia Constable 12
Elizabeth Constable 10

None born in County.

Now, I'm sure Witham in Essex is on you radar,

So I don't think the Boatman, Thomas Bustin, is your direct ancestor.........is that right.

Steve.

Re: Bustin of Wolvercote Oxfordshire.

Hi, To confirm Sophia's maiden name I plan to order my great Grandfathers Birth Certificate, I have the registration on ancestry but cant find it on GRO index. He was HENRY BUSTIN, born 3 August 1844 in Woolvercot, Oxford, son of Thomas and Sophia Bustin. Can anyone advise me how to find Henrys birth registration please? Thank you.
