Re: Catherine McNAUGHTON nee BLACKLEY

Dundee Courier 4 July 1898
FOUR CHILDREN IN AMERICA.
Lord Low heard evidence in an action for
divorce by Catherine Blackley or McNaughton,
residing at 23 Broomlands Street, Paisley, against
her husband, Adam McNaughton, sometime re-
siding at Newarthill, Bothwell, now in America.
The action was undefended. The pursuer said
she was married to the defender in October, 1864.
No children had been born of the marriage. Her
husband was a schoolmaster. He was not in very
good circumstances. He discovered he had got
into debt. He left her in the spring of 1865 and
went to America. He had written to her, but had
not sent her money to take her out, as he pro-
mised. She had supported herself by dressmak-
ing. She was led to believed that her husband was
alive. She had received a certificate from the
chief of police at Norwood, Connecticut, to the
effect that he was living there, and was married
and had four children. A witness, when asked if
the defender could not keep himself. Asked if he was
steady, the witness said he was steady at some
things; he was steady in frequenting singing
saloons and the like, but he did not think he was
steady at work. Decree was given.

Re: Catherine McNAUGHTON nee BLACKLEY

Thanks Rupert.

I didn't have that but I knew of the divorce as there is a note written in the margin of the marriage certificate.
