Record/archive offices.

We must all have experienced it, looking at jerky old microfilm machines, and the microfilm reels which the previous user has wound back the wrong way, or the reel you want is right at the bottom draw of the cabinet right at the very back.

Now lets move to microfiche. It takes 2 or 3 goes (realising the writing is back to front/reversed or upside down) before you know what is the right way to put it in. Or some other researcher near you has taken a whole parish worth of fiche instead of 1 or perhaps 2 at a time.

Re: Record/archive offices.

On visiting the Bucks Archives last month, the premises have been improved, better organised and records protected.
This has beed funded by the Council, in conjunction with nominal fees for viewing original records, and recieving better and clearer copies. Tables for viewing microfiche, need to be reserved for a fee of 5. I do not think that is too much, as long as the services are better improved and maintained.

These fees maybe the thin end of a wedge, but the time has come when nothing is for free.

I've always been of the opinion that the records are 'ours', and should be free for all to see. But I can now see that times have changed, and the tax payer cannot fund 'our' hobby for free.

I paid my pennies, and got what I needed. So I cannot complain for once.

Accepted, that it is on a similar theme, but not exactley on point of what the OP was inferring.

Re: Record/archive offices.

The Westminster Record Office in Westminster used to be exempt from readers tickets, you just had to sign in. Today you have to have a readers ticket and can obtain one at the desk. That is better than being turned away with a form where you have to apply by post for one and have it sent to you, thus a wasted journey if you live 130 miles away.
