1891 RG12 Piece 699 Folio 88 Page 22 ED 5 Sch 155 RD West Ashford

Mary J Elms and children transcribed as Johnson. I spent a large percentage of my allotted time on the library computer this morning playing with combinations of input data trying to find a few census images.

Re: Ancestry

My Welsh paternal great grandmother was called Tamar Davies but on one of the census returns, it has been transcribed as 'James', whilst not being Ancestry's fault, it proves how people copied the return without considering the accuracy.

Re: Ancestry

My aim over the next few years is to view the image of all the census transcriptions in my tree.

As a programmer I find this really annoying.

Enter the given name, surname, age (set to exact) and RD exactly as per the transcription and the algorithm will sort and display the results.

How often do you find results in totally unrelated counties given more priority?

Too many times.

Some names, ages, occupations, pob, etc are hard to read so of course there will be differences but why is it so difficult finding a record when you enter the information as it is transcribed?

Re: Ancestry

Anc can be as useful as a ice fireguard.

Tonight I am trying to add more data to my trees and it freezes or we get the patronising "we're sorry" followed by "is unavailable at the moment".

Yes....it's playing up again. I've just sent a message on FB, and ragged on about it on their pages.

It's so damn annoying, I just wish I had the time and money to delete my tree, and start a new one on some other site.
But, I guess that will never happen, so it's a case of put up with it, and moan like crazy at them.
It won't make a difference, but at least it stops me head butting my keyboard.

Re: Ancestry

You can download your tree before you delete it Steve and upload to another site, after all it's only a gedcom. I have mine on various different sites, mind you they need updating

Re: Ancestry

We must be the very few people who have accurate trees on Anc.

I do find Anc have better records than FMP as they tend to release scans of originals as opposed to indexes. FMP Fridays are a waste of time to me now as the records are usually from the USA, Canada, Australia or Republic Of Ireland. And if we do get English records they are said to be exciting but they are just a fraction of what is really out there, or one parish. I have said this before but I find Anc releases more fulsome and complete records. Trouble is you keep getting the "Check back soon" error messages and slow performances.

Yes, same messages I get Ben.

Been on to them again, today. Twice if fact.....and get fobbed off with the same old excuses.

Re: Ancestry

I sometime think that if they have not got a record that someone has put on their tree, then they get a member of the LDS to go to the archives in that area ,and do a search for it. After all it helps their members. In saying that I still have records that are not on Ancs. Although I am on Ancs. and FMP
I still find myself using FS.As I have deleted my tree on Ancs, several times ,I have decided not to replace my records for most of my tree. I have very little early records that have not been seen on Ances. yet, and on someone elses tree.,so my tree cannot be found now. I ask myself what is the point.

Funny you should say that, about not having the records on Anc.

Several times I've been asked by a so called 'common interest' family member asking about my Private tree. I check the Anc. member who is enquiring, and they have nothing to show....not even a tree, nor anything else.....nothing at all.
Does make me wonder sometimes.....
