Surname Howard

Hello all
I have a Sarah Ann Rachel Howard marrying in 1857 in Victoria to William John Stevens. I understand she was born 1828 in Bedfordshire (so 29 when she married), and died in Muskvale Vic in 1897. I puzzled over the age when married. Unsuccessful searching for her arrival in Vic. However a S A Howard arrived in Adelaide aboard Baboo in 1848, also a Robert & Martha Howard. Sarah named her daughter Elizabeth Martha. However there is also a record of Sarah Ann Howard marrying Morris Lucas in SA 21.10.1852. But I wonder if she is still one and the same. Is anyone able to shed any more light on the Howards of South Australia? Thank you JandL

Re: Surname Howard

Hi

There is a copy of the marriage schedule that says she was b. Middleton, Lancashire. It also says that William was a widower and Sarah a spinster. But very difficult to read.

Re: Surname Howard

A possible birth.

Lancashire OPC:

Baptism: 29 Aug 1834 St Leonard, Middleton, Lancashire
Sarah Ann Howard - Daughter of Robert Howard & Betty
Abode: Tonge
Occupation: Weaver
Baptised by: R.C.W. Wilkinson Curate
Register: Baptisms 1833 - 1834 from the Bishops Transcripts, Page 64, Entry 507
Source: LDS Film 1545702

That would conflict with age at death, but this is only a bap.
Incidentally, that may be the wrong death in 1897, because her father is listed as Robert Stevens, not Howard! However, the informant may have made an error.

Re: Surname Howard

If the arrival in Adelaide is correct, this could be them in 1841 (wrongly transcribed as 'Heywood'). Could be Heyward or Heywood on the image

I notice the name is correct on arrival in Adelaide.

I understand Prestwich Cum Oldham is linked to or associated with Middleton.

Civil Parish: Prestwich Cum Oldham
Hundred: Salford
County: Lancashire
RD: Ashton under Lyne and Oldham
Sub-RD: Chadderton
HO107; Piece: 548; Book: 15; ED: 12; Folio: 13; Page: 19

Robt Heywood 70 [Cotton weaver]
Betty Heywood 50
Martha Heywood 25
Robt Heywood 14
Sarah Heywood 12
Margaret Heywood 25
[All b. Prestwich Cum Oldham]

Re: Surname Howard

I've seen the 1852 marriage for Morris and Sarah, but I can't see an obvious death for a Morris or a Maurice before 1857.

The marriage in 1857 in Victoria looks good, her birthplace more or less confirms that. And also she would be using her maiden twice!
