Re: Looking for Maria

In 1891 at 176 Rodbourne Road Swindon there is a Maria Green, 21, single, b. Gornal Staffordshire, living with her parents James a chain maker and Harriet.

Gornal looks rather like the place of birth of Maria Shakespeare on the 1901 census. Could this be your Maria but still using her maiden name? If you know her father's name and occupation, which should be on the marriage certificate, you should quickly be able to confirm this or otherwise.

Re: Looking for Maria

Well spotted Robesur, her age and birthplace, as you said, fit in with 1901 census.
If they married in 1888 you think they would have had some kiddies before 1891? yet the youngest in 1901 is Walter 6 born Swindon.
Is it possible Harry was married to someone else before Maria?
I can't find the marriage poster has listed in 1888.

Marriage

Name: SHAKESPEARE, Harry
Registration District: Kings Norton
County: Worcestershire
Registration: Jul/Sep qtr 1888

Volume No: 6C
Page No: 666

Harry Shakespeare married one of the following people

SMITH, Eliza
GREEN, Maria

Seems strange they are living with parents in 1891 and not letting on they were married. Wonder if the parents disagreed. Too young to have been married to someone else, I feel

Re: Looking for Maria

Thanks folks for updates.
Free BMD 1888 have the groom as Harry Rollason.
Perhaps Maria & her parents were out on the census night and a neighbour
gave details, not knowing married name?
Sad about the little one.

Oznannie
Again Free BMD don't have Sarah's birth and death.

Re: Looking for Maria

Drwe: Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I have some info on Harry F Shakespeare and Maria Green, if you are still interested.

According to my researches they were married on 6th August 1888 at St Paul's, West Smethwick.

The anecdotal info I have from my family is that they ran away to get married because it was against family wishes. It was to do with a class issue.

Maria Green's parents were James Green (born 1841) and Harriet Hartill (born 1843) they were married in 1862 and had 11 children (Maria was the fourth eldest born in 1870).

Harry F (pretty sure the F stood for Frank) was the eldest of 9 children he was an engine driver for GWR (Great Western Railway), Swindon. The anecdotal info I have for him is that he was a brilliant artist (completely untaught), he could just draw anything. I remember my grandmother talking about him.

If you would like any more info about the Shakespeares/Greens (I have a bit), then please just let me know and I'll help if I can.

Re: Looking for Maria

Ref last post by Fiesta Harry and Maria were my grandparents. I understood that one of my relatives moved to Christchurch, New Zealand. I wonder if we have a connection? My father was Harold Shakespeare of Swindon, married to my mother Phyllis Dowers. They later moved to Cheltenham. Have recently started to look into family tree and discovered my Uncle Walter died in Belgium during First World War aged 20. Any information you have would be gratefully received.
Many thanks
