James and Sarah Ward

I would like to know the 1851 census details of a James and Sarah Ward. James was born about 1788. Sarah was born about 1791. In the 1841 census they had 5 children, the youngest being Henry Ward born 1830.
They were living in St Marylebone. Hundred: Ossulstone(Holborn Division).
Their children were Sarah 25, Mary Ann 22, James 19 John 15 and Henry 11.
Any help would be gratefully recieved
Many thanks

Re: James and Sarah Ward

Hello,

Had a look in 1851 for Sarah Ward, born 1791 +/- 2 years, with a Henry in the household. The only two which came up lived in Staffordshire and Nottinghamshire. This probably means that at least one of them had died!

Next, I looked on FreeBMD for deaths of Sarah/Henry Ward between 1841 and 1851, but they are too numerous to contemplate!

Then I searched for Henry Ward, birth around 1830. Again there were 103 results, on FMP.

If you have any info at all on the family, eg occupation, name of spouse, please let us know, and then we may be able to find some of the family in 1851.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Josie

Re: James and Sarah Ward

Hi Josie,
I believe it will have been Sarah that died between 1841 and 1851 as James' son Henry Hazard Ward was married on the 28th July 1851 and James is still alive! James was a Tailor. Unfortunately I don't know any other details. But I do believe they stayed in the same area. I am trying to read the address of where Henry was living but unfortunately I unable to read the writing.
Many thanks again for looking.
Rachel

Re: James and Sarah Ward

Hello Rachel,

I know you haven't asked for the 1881 census, but I've found an interesting entry. If it is correct, then we may be able to work backwards!

Address 13 Boswell Court, St George the Martyr.

The Wards....

Henry H 50, Potman, born Marylebone
Mary A, 50 born St James
Matilda 16 born St George the Martyr, Imbecile from 2 years old - (Aww, the poor soul!)
Arthur 9 born St George the Martyr

Class: RG11; Piece: 337; Folio: 77; Page: 50 (Copyright TNA)

Best wishes,

Josie

Re: James and Sarah Ward

... in 1871, Matilda is in Hospital in Southwark Bridge Road. Sorry can't read the name of the hospital!

There is a tick in the imbecile, idiot, lunatic column.

Maybe she had something like meningitis as a baby and was brain-damaged.

Life was very cruel in those days.

Class: RG10; Piece: 603; Folio: 26; Page: 45 (Copyright TNA)

Still looking for the rest of the family....

Re: James and Sarah Ward

Just been having a look at the 1841 census, provided by Dave in your other thread! According to that return, James is "Local Dealer" - I think that's what it says!

I've been looking for a tailor!

There is an 1851 possibility where James is shown as Father-in-Law, Widower and retired Tallow Maker.

Anyway, even if it is only for the purpose of elimination, here it is....

Address: 47 Queens Road, Marylebone

Occupants:

Benjamin Orridge 37
Elizabeth Orridge 37
James Ward 66
Elizabeth Tibbles 18 House Maid
David E May 26 Visitor

Oh no! I've just closed the page by mistake and now I can't find it again!

Re: James and Sarah Ward

Hi Josie,
Thanks for the information so far. Really appreciate it. I don't think the 1851 entry is the right James ward as I don't believe James had a daughter called Elizabeth. His daughters were sarah and Mary Ann! So I think we can eliminate that one!
The marriage certificate between Henry, his son in 1851 says that he is Tailor and so does the baptisms for henry and George(who died)
Many thanks again for your help!
Rachel

Hello again, Rachel

Is it possible that you could show us the address part of the Marriage Certificate, so that some us could try and decipher it?

Thanks,

Josie
