Question DAVIDSON, Alexander Chalmers b. 20 Jan 1881 Glasgow d. ??

Searching for my Great Uncle Alexander Chalmers Davidson. Born 20 Jan 1881 at 34 Gourlay St St. Rollox, Glasgow. Parents James MacAlpine Davidson and Annie Chalmers.

My Grandmother Annie (Nan) Davidson, later MacGregor was his only sibling. There is no one alive in the immediate family to ask- both my mother's siblings died unmarried and childless before I was born and my mother died when I was 16.

I have him on the census in 1881, 1891, 1901. In a March 1899 London Gazette, he was listed as being appointed a Postman in Glasgow.

He was the informant on his father's death certificate of 10 Dec 1907 at 566 Keppochhill Rd, Glasgow. His mother Annie had died just a month earlier at the same address, leaving my grandmother an orphan at 16.

I have not been able to find any reliable entries for Alexander on the 1911 census, marriage, or death certificates. He could have stayed in Glasgow, or relocated to Edinburgh as his sister (my grandmother) did by 1921- if not earlier.

I did order a death certificate for an Alexander Chalmers Davidson in Aberdeen d. 9 Aug 1974, and although the father's name is James Davidson the occupation is wrong (should be Railway Clerk, not foundry labourer,) and the mother's name is Margaret Chalmers not Annie (although MY Alexander's father's mother was Margaret). DOB is off too- 2 Nov 1890 so 9 years off.

Wife is Jemima Duncan, address 43 Gillespie St, Aberdeen. He also died of the same cause as my great-grandmother Annie Chalmers Davidson, and my Grandmother Annie (Nan) Davidson MacGregor.

Granted the informant was his son, William Davidson so I do know if facts are cloudy they do the best they can- and my grandmother Annie (Nan) fudged her age by about 3 years on her marriage and even at her death my grandfather gave her age as 3 years younger than she was- and gave her father's name as Alexander Davidson (her brother's name) and the mother's name is completely wrong (seems he used his dead sister's name!)

So it's possible I have the correct certificate... but would like to have definite proof by perhaps even connecting with Alexander's descendants, if he had any!

I followed this Alexander back to his 1914 marriage to Jemima Duncan. and it can't be MY Alexander, as he also gave James Davidson, with wrong occupation and deceased, AND Margaret Chalmers (not noted as deceased)

Surely the man himself who was 26 when his parents died knew who his parents were and his own age so I am pretty sure this one man is NOT my Great Uncle.

Have you looked the 1911 Census for him. He was also an age to be called up for WW1.Marriages on Scotlanspeople go up to 1941.Perhaps he also emigrated.

New! For the first time Glasgow voters' rolls (1857-1962) will be available online via Ancestry from Friday 16th September 2016. As a library member you have free access to this database in every Glasgow library. This powerful tool will enable you to search the database by name rather than address so will not only speed up your research but will also enable you to delve deeper into the lives of your ancestors.

Anyone privy to these records.

Re: DAVIDSON, Alexander Chalmers b. 20 Jan 1881 Glasgow d. ??

Given his birth year 1881 he probably wouldn't be on the E/R until c1902.

In 1902 father, James is at the same address as the 1901 census, he is listed as a clerk which fits with the 1901 census, clerk [railway]. Alexander not there yet..

Geoff

EDIT: Father, James is confirmed at that address in 1905, no Alexander, unless it is just listing the head of households..

Re: DAVIDSON, Alexander Chalmers b. 20 Jan 1881 Glasgow d. ??

Interestingly I can't see an Alexander or Alexander C after 1901 associated with that address or as a postman

Geoff

EDIT:
Not sure if this is helpful:
In the 1902 Glasgow PO Directory there is only one Alexander with no occupation listed: [of Little Hill Lanarkshire] Res 2 Hamilton park terrace, Hillhead.

This one looks to have died in 1910, same address as above. Probate doesn't look to point to your Alexander..
