Mary and Margaret SHEARER

Mary SHEARER - Can't find a birth/baptism on FS or SP

James Malcoum & Mary Shearar
8 Apr 1815 Largs, Ayr
Batch: M116022

Page 12
1863 Deaths in the Parish of Largs in the County of Ayr
No. 36 - Mary Malcolm Widow of James Malcolm Wan.. ? Largs - 1863 June Twenty first 4H. 30m. P.M. Lade's land Lade Street Largs - F - 69 years - William Shearer Dikebuilder (deceased) Margaret Shearer M.S. Speirs (deceased) - Chronic bronchitis of several years As Cert by J/I. ? Campbell M.D. - James Wylie Son in Law - 1863 June 27/29th ? At Largs James Caskie Registrar

No sign of a marriage on SP for William and Margaret SPEIR(S)/SPEAR(S)

James and Mary had eight children. Only one given a middle name. Can Newlands help in any way?

Margaret
William
Janet
Robert
James
Mary Newlands
Archibald
Alexander

Naming pattern is not as expected but if you remove Janet and Robert you have William & Margaret for Mary's parents, as per death certificate.

Re: Mary and Margaret SHEARER

Is Margaret who married John a sister of Mary above or this one:

Margaret SHEARER b. 2 Jan 1787 c. 14 Jan 1787 Largs, Ayr
William SHEARER & Margeart WARK
Batch: C116022

William Shearer & Margaret Wark
2 Nov 1776 Largs, Ayr
Batch: M116022

groom's name: Johne Malcoum
groom's birth date:
groom's birthplace:
groom's age:
bride's name: Margret Shearer
bride's birth date:
bride's birthplace:
bride's age:
marriage date: 29 May 1819
marriage place: Largs, Ayr

Margaret died before 1841 it seems.

John and Margaret had seven children and none with a middle name:

Margaret
Janet
Robert
William
John
Agnes
Mary

Naming pattern suggests that Margaret's parents should be William & Margaret

John and James are brothers - parents Robert & Jean

Re: Mary and Margaret SHEARER

been puzzling on this one Dave. Think prob Mgt is Wark not Spiers but proving it might be hard. You could check Mgt's birth to see if her father was a dyke builder the same as Mary's father?

Re: Mary and Margaret SHEARER

Thanks Barbara.

There are several possibles but as you say hard to prove any of them.

Pity the William and Margaret SPEIR(S)/SPEAR(S) marriage can't be found.

I'm wondering if they are half-sisters. Yes, if Margaret's father was a dyke builder.

I should perhaps search for children with middle name Wark. And search for a death for a Margaret nee WARK.

Dave

Re: Mary and Margaret SHEARER

Ann Shearer
Christening Date: 3 Oct 1784
Christening Place: LARGS, AYR
Father's Name: William Shearer
Mother's Name: Margeart Warke
Batch: C116022

Plus Margaret in 1787.

That's two daughters found so far but there should be other children with marriage in 1776.

Re: Mary and Margaret SHEARER

David Shearer
Christening Date: 24 Aug 1777
Christening Place: LARGS, AYR
Father's Name: William Shearer

Jeanet Shearer
Christening Date: 15 Jun 1782
Christening Place: LARGS, AYR
Father's Name: William Shearer

I won't guess who the mother is for those as they could fit with either family.

It has solved one issue. They are not half-sisters as we clearly have 2x William.

You would expect William & Margaret Speir to name a daughter Margaret so main issue not solved.

If it fitted neatly we would have Mary abt 1794 and sister Margaret abt 1796.

the above have transcribed a lot of gravestones but not Largs yet. They do have Shearers and Spiers in their list though.

Re: Mary and Margaret SHEARER

One good thing Barbara, we know the informant was correct as there is a William Shearer and Margeart Speir/Spier.
