Re: HARDAKER & Betty STIMSON

Trying to follow William S, he is in Sydney until at least 1867 [Marine Hotel, 93 George St. also at 44 Pitt St.]. He isn't in Sydney in the 1875 directory.

Wonder if these are him.. [No sign of a Jane]

Re: HARDAKER & Betty STIMSON

Maybe "George Corby" was an alias used by Wm Lockhart in court and in dealings with the police to hide his previous issues.

I also found:
m/c NSW BDM: 514/1862; Groom: HARRIS, JOHN: Bride: McMASTER, JANE; SYDNEY DISTRICT

but I don't think it is as likely as Jane and George were spoken of in 1858 as being a married couple and a Jane McMASTER married William S. LOCKHART in 1858.

If William S. LOCKHART = William Spence LOCKHART then here's some further info:

EMPIRE (Sydney, N.S.W.) Tues 3 Nov 1863 Page 2:
WATER POLICE COURT. -MONDAY
BEFORE Messrs. E. North and N. D. Stenhouse.
William Spence Lockhart, landlord of the Marine Hotel, George-street, pleaded guilty of Sunday trading at illegal hours, on the 25th instant, and was flned 10s., with 6s. costs of court.

WEST COAST TIMES (N.Z.) 4 May 1868 Page 3: William Spence Lockhart (Inport Merchant of Hokitika, N.Z.)

There was an 81 ton schooner, the "Jane Lockhart" (general merchantise, animals) sailing between Sydney and Hokitita (N.Z.) in 1861 / 1868. She was sometimes rigged as a brig or barque (or referred to as such)

Some of her many trans-Tasman voyages:
JANE LOCKHART OF SYDNEY, JOHN WILLING, MASTER, BURTHEN 81 TONS FROM THE PORT OF TARAMAKE TO SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, 26 SEPTEMBER 1864
JANE LOCKHART OF SYDNEY, JOHN SMITH, MASTER, BURTHEN 81 TONS FROM THE PORT OF HOKITIKA TO SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, 12TH JUNE 1866
JANE LOCKHART OF SYDNEY JOHN SMITH MASTER BURTHEN 81 TONS FROM THE PORT OF HOKITIKA TO SYDNEY NEW SOUTH WALES 20 FEB 1867

WEST COAST TIMES (N.Z.) 9 Jul 1868 Page 3:
BANKRUPCY SITTINGS
Cases:- .... William Spence Lockhart ........

In Bankruptcy WEST COAST TIMESA Aug 1869 Page1:
William Spence Lockhart (Coal Merchant of Hokitika (N.Z.)) Adjudicated Bankrupt.

(Discharged from bankrupcy; See WEST COAST TIMES (N.Z.) 15 Dec 1869 Page 2:

William Spence Lockhart. Residence: 23 Aug 1869 - Hokitika, West Coast region of New Zealand's South Island.

He was on jury duty in NZ on 10 May 1871.

WEST COAST TIMES (N.Z.) 22 June 1871 Page 2:
THE ARAHURA BRIDGE.
To the Editor of the West Coast Times and Observer.
SIR, -I read the correspondence of yout correspondent relative to the Arahura Suspension Bridge, as inserted in your issue of yesterday. Much to my regret I found that no mention was made to one William Spence Lockhart, from whose drawings, and original designs, the bridge was created. Honor, I think, should be given to whom honor is due.
In order that no invidious remarks may be made, I wish to say that Mr Lockhart is utterly ignorant of this friendly letter being sent to you.
I am, &c.,
FRED DICK
June 22, 1871

See Also WEST COAST TIMES, Issue 1789, 24 June 1871 Page 2 (Letter claiming that William Spence Lockhart's involvement in the bridge construction was minimal).

LAW REPORT Sydney Morning Herald (N.S.W.) Wed 12 Oct 1887 Page 4:
INSOLVENCY COURT-Tuesday, October 11.
(Before the DEPUTY CHIEF COMMISSIONER.)
William Spence Lockhart, of Windsor, (N.S.W.), contractor Liabilities, 120; assets, 176.

From Ancestry.com:
William Spence Lockhart. Residence: 11 Apr 1889 - Tenterfield, N.S.W.
William Spence Lockhart. Residence: 28 Feb 1894 - Narrabri West, N.S.W. (Contractor)

He was living at Narrabri West (N.S.W.) on 26 Feb 1895.

BUT the questions remain;
Where was William Spence LOCKHART born?
Where did Jane LOCKHART die? (It could have been anywhere as William appears to have had a brigantine, the "Jane Lockhart" which was wrecked on 11 Dec 1868 without loss of life although at that time it may not have been owned by William.)

Re: HARDAKER & Betty STIMSON

Thanks Geoff,

That seems very likely.

m/c NSW BDM: 190/1858; Groom: LOCKHART, WILLIAM S.; Bride: McMASTER, JANE; SYDNEY DISTRICT

d/c NSW BDM: LOCKHART, WILLIAM S., 14033/1900; Father: JAMES; Mother: JANET; PARRAMATTA DISTRICT

It is reasonable to think that Jane McMASTER of Ayr would have married a Scot.

And Dundonald is only a stone's throw from Ayr.

Now where did Jane LOCKART (ne McMASTER) end up ?
