Mr. William Thornley, senior partner of the firm of W. Thornley & Sons, Sydney, died at Miss Hill's private hospita] early on Saturday .morning. Mr. Thornley had been in Adelaide for some little time in connection with the carrying out of an in. terlocking contract for the Municipal Tramways Trust, and o week ago was un- expectedly seized with a paralytic stroke, from which he never recovered. He ivas an engineer of remarkable ability, and was recognised «s one of the greatest authori- ties on interlocking engineering' work in Australia. He was for many years inter- locking engineer to the New South Wales railways. Later he became general mana- ger of the Lithgow Ironworks, in New ¡south Wales. For some years past he had been in business on his own account, in partnership with his sons. His was a striking personality, and his many friends not only in this State, but also in Vic- toria and New South Wales, will mourn the loss of a true friend. As an illustra tion of _ the deceased's command of men, it ia said that during the years he was general manager at the Lithgow Ironworks there was not a single workmen's strike.

Re: RUNCIMAN & THORNLEY families

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. This is one of several puzzles.

N.S.W Assisted Immigrants 'Earl Dalhousie' arrival date: 7 May 1877
Name: THORNLEY William
Birth Year: abt 1855
Age: 22
Calling: Engine-Driver
Native Place & County: Leigh, Lancashire
Parent’s names, & if alive their residence: Thomas – (24 Lloyd street, Leigh)
Religious Denomination: Wesleyan
Read & Write: Both
Relations in the Colony: None

No sign of spouse Betsy in the shipping records. Their marriage:

Marriages Dec 1876
Thornley William Bolton 8c 383
BALL Betsey Bolton 8c 383

So William came out very soon after their marriage. Their first child born in NSW as far as I can see was John in 1881. That's quite a gap so something does not add up. I have just seen a funeral notice which mentions a Mr & Mrs W G SLOMAN:

# 7491/1906 SLOMAN WILLIAM G THORNLEY MARY A LITHGOW

Death # 1527/1954 SLOMAN MARY ALICE WILLIAM BETTY CHATSWOOD

So it looks as though Mary Alice is the first born. Now, was she born in England and therefore did Betsy and newborn arrive after William? Or was she born in NSW between 1877 and 1881 but her birth not registered?

The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954) - Saturday 1 September 1906
SOCIAL
... Despite the excessively wet weather there was a large gathering at St Paul's Church of England, Lithgow on Thursday afternoon, when Miss Mary Alice Thornley, eldest surviving daughter of Mr. William Thornley general manager of Eskbank Ironworks, was married to Mr. William George Sloman, second son of Mr. George Sloman of Granville. The church had been decorated by friends of the bride and over the altar hung a large wedding bell. The Rev. R. J. Cameron officiated. Miss Ethel [born 1887] Thornley (sister of the bride) and Miss Grimshaw (of Sydney) were the bridesmaids...

So it seems other daughters were born and died young. That explains the gap.

Please see what you can find. Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Re: RUNCIMAN & THORNLEY families

Hello crankypants,

It can't be this one although the RD is right:

Births Mar 1879
Thornley Mary Alice Bolton 8c 475

Could be this one:

Births Mar 1877
THORNLEY Mary Bury 8c 611

Not likely to be this one - it's Liverpool:

Births Jun 1878
Thornley Mary Alice W. Derby 8b 412

This one is probably too far away:

Births Dec 1877
Thornley Mary Alice Chorley 8e 502

Regards,

Dave

Re: RUNCIMAN & THORNLEY families

Hello crankypants,

It's not SMITH but THORNLEY in Lancashire is just as bad. Just taking Bolton RD and 1876-1877 at least 14 female births. I noticed these deaths:

Deaths Dec 1876
Thornley Eliza 1 Bolton 8c 215

Deaths Mar 1878
Thornley Esther 0 Bolton 8c 205

We might be out of luck with this puzzle. The next one is just as tough

Regards,

Dave

Re: RUNCIMAN & THORNLEY families

Hi Dave

Not much luck finding Betsy THORNLEY & child in shipping records between 1876-1881. Wonder if any BALL members came out with her.

I knew that death in Adelaide rang a bell. 'DER'

cheers

Re: RUNCIMAN & THORNLEY families

Hello crankypants,

Thanks for looking, again. Yes we have looked at this before but I have new stuff thanks to NLA. I don't know about any BALL arriving but Betsy did have 10 siblings. so it's possible.

Oh, I looked on the shipping image and William is listed with the single males. No sign of Betsy or Mary on the image. No sign of any BALL family on the vessel with William in 1877.

There is a BALL family in 1878 but they are from Shropshire. Ready for next puzzle?

Regards,

Dave

Re: RUNCIMAN & THORNLEY families

Hello crankypants,

I'll delay the next puzzle for a few days

Betsy THORNLEY died in 1938 in Marrickville so she must have moved.

Quote:
1930 N.S.W Electoral Roll - Parramatta - Waitara
THORNLEY Betsey, Bolton, Stuart avenue, Normanhurst, home duties
Is she in Lang in 1936 E/R as Betsy?

Please see what you can find. Thanks.

Regards,

Dave
