Looks like Walter is an error.

Cross, William, -- 1797-1842.

A Brief History of the Methodist Church in Fiji
Established in 1835 through the Wesleyan Missionary Society (WMS) via Tonga in the persons of David Cargill and William Cross (London, England). ...

These missionaries died in their field stations:
William Cross 1842 at Somosomo;
John Hunt 1848 at Viwa
David Cargill 1843 in Tonga.

By special, licence, at St John's Church, Parramatta, by the Rev. SAMUEL MARSDEN, the Rev. WILLIAM CROSS, Wesleyan Missionary, to AUGUSTA MARGARET, eldest daughter of Mr. JAMES SMITH, Architect, of the same place.

DIED.
At the residence of her father, Mr. James Smith, Fitz Roy Cottage, Parramatta, Mrs. Cross, widow of the late Rev. William Cross, Wesleyan Missionary to Tonga and the Feejee Islands. [Fiji ] Mrs. C. died on the 14th instant, in the thirty-ninth year of her age, leaving five children (three sons and two daughters), to deeply deplore the loss of an excellent and affectionate mother. Mrs. Cross took her departure in great composure and Christian tranquillity, leaving a testimony how much she had been devoted to the cause of her Redeemer, amongst the Heathen in the South Sea Islands for upwards of ten years.

That's strange, the marriage that Gibbo found in post #4 William says he is a bachelor, his possible first wife d. 1832 in Tonga [Public tree]

William was in Tonga in 1827. So returned to Sydney and married, probably 2nd time. Went to Fiji in 1835 with his wife.
