Re: Mary Alice Botterill 1856 Irland

This is strange :- 1881 census
RD Berwick
ED 6
Pc 5129
F 73
P 15

John F. Gray 50, railway platelayer, Ireland
Christiana Gray 47, wife, Scotland
Mary Alice Robertson 24, dau. Blacksmith's wife, Berwick on Tweed
John Fleming Gray 9, son, Berwick on Tweed
Adam Gray 7, son, Berwick on Tweed
James S. Gray, son, 5 Berwick on Tweed
Adam Robertson 4, grandson, Berwick on Tweed
Peter Robertson 1, grandson, Berwick on Tweed

There must be some sort of step relationship involved but it is something to work on.

1911 Mary Alice Robertson specifies born Newery, Ireland, so that might help.

Re: Mary Alice Botterill 1856 Irland

Yes, Christiana is Mary's mother, remarried to John Grey

1861 census, Berwick
ED 6
Pc 3885
F 73
P15
William Botterill 35, shoemaker , Beds, (or could be Leeds)
Christian Botterill, 27, Scotland
Mary Botterill 5 , Ireland

1870 Q3 Berwick Vol 10b, P 490
John Fleming Gray m Christina Botterill

Where do you get the death of William in 1898 from? I can't find any death entry at all Suitable in that year.
There was a William Botterill died Berwick on Tweed Q3 1868. The age given is 45 yrs so a little too old but I think this is likely to be him.

Re: Mary Alice Botterill 1856 Irland

the birth reg for John Fleming Gray 1871 gives the mothers maiden name as Sherlaw so you have Christina Shirlaw born Scotland ~1834 for Mary Alice's mother.
( also there were 3 Botterill/Sherlaw children born Berwick who died as infants, Sarah 1867-1870, Christina 1863-1863 and Elizabeth 1861-1867)

From the 1841 and 1851 censuses looks like she was born in Berwickshire, in Coldingham, just on the Scottish side of the border, daugh. of Adam and Alison.

Re: Mary Alice Botterill 1856 Irland

the 1868 death is correct, it was reported in the Illustrated Berwick Journal Oct 2nd 1868 as a startling and sudden death, Mr William Botterill of Greens, shoemaker and gardener which matches with the 1861 census details.

Apparently he was expecting to be on the new voters list as a ratepayer but was not. His appeal was rejected, he got so agitated he burst a blood vessel near his lung and died two days later.

Re: Mary Alice Botterill 1856 Irland

Thank you Elaine !

Could you add a link to your findings?

I found this on FS

https://familysearch.org/tree/pedigr...N-5YF/portrait

Sarah: 1867-1870 with family: https://familysearch.org/tree/person...YN66-ZX5K-176R

Here is William born 1813-1868 ?

And mary Boterill1863 ?

Mary Botteril 1863–1934
https://familysearch.org/tree-data/p...T?locale=false

Is this the right John Fleming Gray 1871 ?
https://familysearch.org/tree/person...YN66-ZX5K-176R

https://familysearch.org/tree/person/L21F-TX4/details here John Fleming Gray
1831–1898 is the father to Mary Alice Robertson.

https://familysearch.org/tree-data/p...T?locale=false

Looks like i got the wrong father William Boterill ?

But here
https://www.myheritage.no/research/c...352231-1500863

And a tree on ancestry.com has Mary Alice Botterill born 1856 m Adam.

From the family finder dna test we have 0 matches on Boterill and 16 matches on Gray.

Re: Mary Alice Botterill 1856 Irland

Willliam Botterill is the correct father for Mary Alice Botterill.

The tree that says John Gray is her father is just going by the 1881 census which does indeed say daughter, however in the 1871 census, just a few months after John Gray married Mary Alice's mother it says step daughter and the 1861 census has William, Christian and Mary aged 5 all together as the Botterill family.

It is always best to check censuses, baptisms etc for yourself and just use other peoples trees as a starting point. Unfortunately I can't give you links to my work as it is all on Ancestry or Find My Past and you can't access them without a subscription.

I don't know much about dna profiling but possibly you have no matches to Botterill because it is an unusual name and not many people have it in their tree?

Elaine
PS the link you have to John Fleming Gray 1871 is the son of John Fleming Gray and Christian, i.e. Mary Alice's half brother.
In 1891 there is a Mills Fleming Grey b. 1837 living next door but one to John & Chistian, possibly his brother.

Re: Mary Alice Botterill 1856 Irland

An interesting proof that John Fleming Gray couldn't be Mary Alice's father :-

When he died several newspapers carried reports of his burial, 28 July 1898.
He was a freeman of Berwick and was buried at Berwick cemetery with full military honours. He was a Crimean veteran having served at Sebastopol with the 31st regiment and later served in the China War.

The siege of Sebastopol was Sept 1854 to Sept 1855. Mary Alice was -5 at the censuses so born April 1855 - March 1856 so there is very little chance that John could be her father.

Re: Mary Alice Botterill 1856 Irland

Interesting that Adam & Mary Alice got married at a register office, not a church :-

Berwick News and General Advertiser, 21 Oct 1879
At the Register Office on 14th inst. Adam Robertson blacksmith Tweedmouth to Mary Alice Botterill of the Greens Berwick.

(the Greens is where they were in censuses)

Re: Mary Alice Botterill 1856 Irland

This was great thank you Elaine.

If the tree on FS is right we can trace the motherline to Mary Alice Robertson to Scotland late 1690s. We just dna testet this line.
