Re: R.I.C. List of names and service numbers

Hello fellow genealogists

Looking at this post, would someone please be able to find out details from the book by James Herlihy concerning my ancestor William Fitzpatrick. He was an officer in the Royal Irish Constabulary and was born in 1847 in Queens County, Ireland

my thanks

If you are not able to get his service record free from any other source, you should be able to get a copy from the PSNI Museum in Belfast, for 25:

Re: R.I.C. List of names and service numbers

Hi Daveham9

I was wondering if you could check my Grandfather details

He was in the RIC
Patrick White 1863
I think his father was Timothy White 1845
Possibly from Cork

Thank you

Ireland, The Royal Irish Constabulary 1816-1921
Name: Guest, Wm
Birth Date/Age: 22
Birthplace: Roscommon
Marriage or Comments: EMIGRATED
Enlisted: 1888
Film #: 852089

but the following appeared in the newspaper upon his death:

The Sydney Morning Herald - Friday 15 July 1932, page 15. News
MR. W. GUEST.
Mr. William Guest, ex-Inspector of police, who died suddenly at Hunter's Hill on Wednesday afternoon, aged 66 years, was born in County Roscommon, Ireland. He served for some time with the Royal Irish Constabulary, and in 1892 came to this country, and joined the New South Wales police force. First stationed at Bathurst, he was transferred to Mudgee, where in 22 years he rose from the rank of constable to that of Inspector. In 1921 he was promoted to Newcastle, but ill-health compelled him to resign from the force in 1923, and he made his home at Hunter's Hill. He is survived by Mrs. Guest and one son (Mr. John Guest). The funeral will take place this morning.

Regards,

Dave

Re: R.I.C. List of names and service numbers

Hello and to the Forum.

Sorry, but I don't have a copy of the book or any way of looking up details.

The details I posted were obtained while I was in Dublin.

I have queries that are also waiting for someone who can get access to Jim Herlihy's book. I know there was a copy in Dublin Library in January 2008.

Dave

Re: R.I.C. List of names and service numbers

Dear Dave,

I looked up Guest in "Royal Constabulary Officers" by Jim Herlihy and there are no Guests listed. However, I was also looking for a relative in the RIC and he wasn't listed there either!

I found some information online that quotes the LDS site.

Regards,
Dermot

Re: R.I.C. List of names and service numbers

Hi Dermot,

Thanks for looking. It seems there are two books although I only looked at one while I was in the Dublin Library and I'm sure it was not "Royal Constabulary Officers" although I don't have the other title.

William Guest had No. 53154 which was issued between 10.4.1888 and 18.4.1891.

Searching for the titles of two books turns up only this one:

The Royal Irish Constabulary : A Complete Alphabetical List of Officers and Men, 1816-1922

HERE

Re: R.I.C. List of names and service numbers

Dear Dave,
Thanks for the information. It seems there are two books by Jim Herlihy. The one I looked up was "Royal Irish Constabulary Officers: A Biographical Dictionary and Genealogical Guide 1816 - 1922". I'll try to find the book you refer to. I see it listed on the flyleaf of the book I have.
Regards,
Dermot
