R.I.C. List of names and service numbers

Hello,

I was wondering if any English or Irish member could get hold of the following book and do a look up for me please. I'd like his service number.

The Royal Irish Constabulary
A complete alphabetical list of officers and men, 1816-1922
Jim Herlihy

Name: Guest, Wm
Birth Date/Age: 22
Birthplace: Roscommon
Marriage or Comments: EMIGRATED
Enlisted: 1888

There used to be two internet sites where look ups could be requested but both appear to have closed in 2009.

Thanks,

Regards,

Dave

Re: R.I.C. List of names and service numbers

Hello Steve,

Thanks. I've seen that. The LDS Family History Center in Sydney is far from me and I've not been there at all. I might have to gather some stuff so I have more than one reason to make the trip by bus.

I posted the look up request on a forum about 7 months ago. I knew look ups were slow so I only went back a few days ago and was surprised to find no reply. Then I decided to read the skicky. Look ups ceased back in 2009.

Regards,

Dave

Jim Herlihy is a serving member of An Garda Siochana (the Irish police force) and is responsible for genealogical enquiries relating to formers members of that force and of the RIC which preceded it. I suggest you contact him directly. He is based at Blarney Garda station, Co Cork. He has a reputation for being extremely helpful and for responding quickly. His contact details are on the attached site:

Re: R.I.C. List of names and service numbers

Hello Jack.

Thanks for looking but that is very strange. Not only is the name on the list that has been filmed:

Ireland, The Royal Irish Constabulary 1816-1921
Name: Guest, Wm
Birth Date/Age: 22
Birthplace: Roscommon
Marriage or Comments: EMIGRATED
Enlisted: 1888
Film #: 852089
Page #: 19

but the following appeared in the newspaper upon his death:

The Sydney Morning Herald - Friday 15 July 1932, page 15. News
MR. W. GUEST.
Mr. William Guest, ex-Inspector of police, who died suddenly at Hunter's Hill on Wednesday afternoon, aged 66 years, was born in County Roscommon, Ireland. He served for some time with the Royal Irish Constabulary, and in 1892 came to this country, and joined the New South Wales police force. First stationed at Bathurst, he was transferred to Mudgee, where in 22 years he rose from the rank of constable to that of Inspector. In 1921 he was promoted to Newcastle, but ill-health compelled him to resign from the force in 1923, and he made his home at Hunter's Hill. He is survived by Mrs. Guest and one son (Mr. John Guest). The funeral will take place this morning.

Regards,

Dave

Re: R.I.C. List of names and service numbers

The book of Jim Herlihy; Royal Irish Constabulary Officers 1816-1922
only has two entries with GU
and both of those are Gun, (strange , but true)
