Re: Bogus family historians. ??

Lots of trades among my Smiths but no actual Smith of any sort so far. I've got Blacksmiths and Whitesmiths in other branches though. Nothing racist about my lot!

Re: Bogus family historians. ??

I was thinking along the lines of actual trade/occupational names.

Like Bowman, Fletcher, Smith, Ploughman/Plowman, Boatman, Clerk, Nailer/Naylor, Chandler, Candleman, Cutler. etc.

e.g. William, son of John, the Bowman.........William, son of John, the Fletcher etc etc.

Then there are place names, like Welshman/Welsh/Welch, Risborough, York, Cornwall, etc etc.

Origins of names are quite interesting, but Smith will have loads of explanations or interpretations.

That's all changed now with all the DNA testing, it's now said not everyone has African roots. Many have Mediterranean roots instead. My mother does not have Scandinavian DNA, which means her ancestors were not Vikings.

Re: Bogus family historians. ??

My wife has a rarish blood group in England, but apparently it's most common in India and the Far East.

Oh, her maiden name isn't Smith.

Re: Bogus family historians. ??

We have discovered, without the use of DNA testing, that my husband probably has Viking ancestry. He has Dupuytren's Syndrome (when the fingers curl into the palm of the hand) and it is thought that this comes from a gene carried by the Vikings. Considering he has family links to Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man, (mongrel that he is) it's not a surprise, although I don't think I'll ever get far enough back to prove it!

Re: Bogus family historians. ??

I have Scottish ancestors from Selkirkshire in the lowlands. May be some Viking blood in there.
