Great Bardfield, Essex 1951

I am attempting to fill in census gaps in my maternal tree, I have my Great Grandfather born 1840 (Abraham White/ Thorogood) in Great Bardfield to Joseph White / Thorogood (Born 1806in Bardfield Saling, Essex)and Mary Ann White/ Thorogood (maiden name Mason) born 1798 Clare, Sufolk. but I cannot find the census for Great Bardfield in 1851, Joseph died 1862 in Great Bardfield. This family changed names in about 1804 when Josephs father John(b 1787 Little Bardfield) married Elizabeth Thorogood (b 1786 Stebbing) in 1804, not sure why the name change? Was there census records for 1851 in Great Bardfield please.

Re: Great Bardfield, Essex 1951

I think that is a different family, It should be

Joseph White or \ Thorogood Born 1806 in Great Bardfield
Spouse Mary Anne Mason now White or Thorogood born 1798 Claire Suffolk Married 10 December 1824 Claire, Suffolk.

Children Emily White or Thorogood born 1831 Little Bardfield Saling
John White or Thorogood born 23 December 1833 Great Bardfield
Abram White or Thorogood 1840 Great Bardfield

I have taken hints from Ancestry but am uncertain if they are correct hence the reason for wanting to find them in the 1851 Census to verify if they are correct.

The name Thorogood has several spellings also the family is White in some records and Thorogood in others or even both, this makes following the family very difficult.

Thank you for any help. :-)

Great Bardfield comes within the registration district of Dunmow, unfortunately the census records of 1851 for Great Dunmow are lost and therefore not available from any source that I have searched.

Thank you, no wonder I could not find them!! I find this part of my family rather confusing. There are several 'Trees' on An...stry but there appears to members there two or three times so I planned to use the Census to verify the members, any other ideas please. I cannot visit Essex to check parish records etc.

Essex Parish Registers are available online from the Essex Records Office Seax website for a fee starting at 5. There seems to be a problem with the site today though, as I cannot get access.

It works now go to http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/

Re: Great Bardfield, Essex 1951

The Seax site is very good and reasonable value, get the cheapest option and download all the images you need and view at your leisure!
They will still need some time to read as some of the writing is VERY difficult to make out but as its the only way you get the info just go for it.

Hi there

I am a direct descendent of Abraham White Thorogood's older brother John (1833) and had lots of fun working out the name change etc etc. I think I got my information from parish records on microfiche although it was several years ago that I last looked at this. Feel free to get in touch.

Hi Pippa,

Did you ever find out the reason for the name change?
I am descended from Abraham's son Walter, My mother is Walters youngest daughter Hilda, The Thorogoods are very complicated to trace, There are several Thorogood's in the Stebbing parish records with children of similar names and dates of birth, The Chapman family also from Stebbing is also complicated as well. I have a tree on A.......Y but have given up as there are so many hints that I feel may be inaccurate?
