Re: WHITEMAN family

Hi

I realise this is a very old thread but I thought I would reply here to begin with. My Whiteman family line stayed in the UK (Photographers in Hastings) but I have been intrigued by Spencer Whiteman and the family that followed him out to Australia.

I have recently returned from a holiday in NSW and my interest in how the family fared has been reignited. I am especially interested in the Camden family line. I have seen all the information on the Camden Historical Society website but would like a little more information about the lives of Thomas Whiteman and Mary Butchers if anyone can provide that from verbal family history.

Unfortunately I live in the Midlands so do not have access to Sussex records apart from what is available on the web.

Kindest regards

Sue

Re: WHITEMAN family

Hello Sue and to the Forum.

Sorry, but I have no oral family history of the line I can pass on. I have photgraphs of the Furner family but not Whiteman.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/

Trove is a great resource and a lot of interesting family details can be found in the old newspapers.

Not all the details on the Camden Historical Society website are correct. I've visited the museum in Camden and checked a few things while there.

Re: WHITEMAN family

Hello Dave and thank you very much for the .

I have been away (again) and am only now managing to catch up on emails. Thank you so much for that link, it has gone into my favourites list. What a wonderful resource that is.

I was wondering if you had time to expand further on the incorrect Whiteman family information on the Camden Historical Society website? We can PM if you feel that would be more appropriate. Except I tried to find a way to PM this question without success!

BFN

Re: WHITEMAN family

Hi Sue,

You need one more post to be able to PM.

I'll check my tree for the Whiteman family.

Re: WHITEMAN family

Hi Dave

Aha that explains it, I thought it might be something to do with activity on the forum. I have some other queries so I will post those on another thread.

Any clarification you can provide with respect to the family would be appreciated.

Kindest regards

Sue

Re: WHITEMAN family

Hi Sue,

I can give you death and burial details for Whiteman family. Marriages if you want to expand the tree. Children if you want to go further.

I have some marriage and baptism details from PR also but they were provided by someone who had access to the Sussex records. I've not seen the images so can't confirm the details.

Re Camden Historical Society, I've not taken Whiteman records from there after finding errors with Furner and other families, so I can't list the errors that are probably there.

Whiteman Thomas 11 Nov 1792 17 Nov 1861 69 b. Udimore, Sussex, England; h/Mary (Butchers) Cawdor Uniting Church NSW

Don't know how accurate the 11 Nov 1792 is. Don't know the source. There is no photo of any headstone available on-line.

The marriage in Udimore in 1814 is on the Sussex Marriage Index. Both of the parish and by Banns.
"Thomas married Mary Butchers by banns on 30 May 1814 in Udimore. At the time he was a bachelor and she a spinster who were both of Udimore. The witnesses to the marriage were John Bourne (junr or senr, can't make out the hand writing), Sarah Matilda Whiteman and John Grant (parish clerk). The bride, groom and witnesses all signed their names."

There is nothing in any records I've seen that shows Thomas with a middle initial.

Re: WHITEMAN family

Brede parish register baptisms
1798, 29 July, Mary Butcher, daughter of James and Mary (born 3 July)

Don't know if the baptism record has age at baptism or if it lists the year of birth. Therefore don't know if 3 July is 1798 or 1797. I'm waiting for Brede to be on-line for my Furner family also.

Re: WHITEMAN family

Wow, thank you so much for all that, so kind of you. That has given me so much to work on it will take some time to digest.

Just a little snippet, I was looking for information on the McLeay Brownlow Hill Estate that Spencer Whiteman worked on in Camden and found a geocache site at:
https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/...f-e74270fa7f72

The author states that some of the filming for "A Place to Call Home" was carried out at Brownlow Hill. It is showing on BBC 2 at the moment here in the UK so I will watch it with renewed interest.

All best wishes

Sue
