Age at baptism

Just how old do you have to be before you get baptised. I came across this baptism which beggars belief.

John Gleave
Birth year 1743
Baptism year 1859
Parents John and Ellen
Abode Stretton nr Warrington

Wonder if the parents attended!

Re: Age at baptism

No limits MLT.

My 2x Great Aunty was baptised at 21, 1 Nov 1871 , one week before she got married, 8 Nov 1871. I'm sure her parents were at both occasions.

And this was a shocker......4 Feb 1738. Mary, born 15 May 1706, wife of William IVES, @ Gt.Missenden.

Re: Age at baptism

I've come across people being baptised just before they get married. I presume that the Vicar wouldn't marry them if they weren't baptised. However in the case I quoted the age of 116 years is a bit excessive.

Ah yes. I should have read your post more carefully.

Re: Age at baptism

They weren't all baptised before they were married. My 4 x g grandfather married in 1815 but didn't get himself baptised till 1838 two days before one of his sons was born, he was 34.
Another one had himself baptised a year after his marriage he was 29. You would think if they left it that long would you bother with it??

Re: Age at baptism

One of mine was baptised as an adult in 1851, aged 22. He married in 1854.

Sometimes parents baptised children late and this not noted in the register, hence why it can make people appear younger.

Re: Age at baptism

Can I just point out that the baptism I quoted had the chap born 1743 and baptised in 1859 when he was 116 years old.

I need to move to Warrington, if they live that long with a concience.

I have to ask, did you find him in any census return, or was it a typo error.

Re: Age at baptism

As he wasn't one of mine I didn't look at the Censuses. I'm presuming it was a typo. I could just imagine a bent little old man, leaning heavily on a walking stick being blessed by the Vicar.
