1711 - The first edition of London's - 'The Spectator', founded by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele.
1812 - The birth of the architect Augustus Pugin. He is best remembered for the Palace of Westminster and his churches such as St Giles' Catholic Church in Cheadle, Staffordshire. It is known as Pugin's Gem and is considered to be the finest of all his churches.
1910 - The birth of David Niven, the Scottish-born film actor whose films included The Pink Panther and The Guns of Navarone.
1940 - English actress Vivien Leigh won an Oscar for her performance as Scarlett O'Hara in the film Gone with the Wind.
1946 - The British Government took control of the Bank of England, after 252 years.
1978 - Charlie Chaplin's coffin was stolen from a Swiss cemetery.

1662 - The first recorded Punch & Judy Show in Britain took place at Covent Garden in London.
1671 - Irishman Colonel Thomas Blood attempted to steal the British Crown Jewels from the Tower of London. Despite being caught red-handed, he was pardoned by King Charles II.
1874 - Howard Carter, the British Egyptologist who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamen, was born, in Kensington, London.

1264 - The start of the Battle of Lewes (Sussex), between King Henry III and the rebel Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester. It marked the high point of the career of Simon de Montfort and made him the 'uncrowned King of England'.

1820 - The birth of Florence Nightingale.

1890 - The first official County Championship cricket match. Yorkshire beat Gloucestershire by eight wickets.

1937 - The Coronation of George VI.

1969 - The minimum voting age in Britain was lowered from 21 to 18.
