Oxford Boatman Records

Hi, I have an Ancestor, Thomas Bustin Born 1819 Wolvercott who's occupation varies between Ag Labourer and Boatman according to baptism of his children, is there any records anywhere of which canal boat he would have worked on please? His mother Elizabeth (Nee Markham) was a coal merchant in 1851 census so maybe he worked on a coal carrying barge?

Re: Oxford Boatman Records

I think a lot would depend on whether he owned a boat or whether he was just employed as crew.

Even so, I'm afraid I haven't a clue where you could look. Possibly there may have been registers of barge owners but would they have survived?
