Re: NEWBERY family of Hampton Court

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. Of course Sarah didn't die before 1800 for spouse John to have remarried. I had her in 1841 census aged 80. So that means there must be a son John. I know the 1841 census listings usually don't show relationships but I've had one person tell me John is not related and another tell me his is a son-in-law.

Quote:
1841
Sarah Newbery 80 Ind. not born in county
John Kensett 50 not born in county
Mary Niton 25 female servant born in county

Quote:
London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921
Name: Sarah Kensett
Spouse Name: John Newbery
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 13 Jun 1800
Parish: St George, Hanover Square
County: Middlesex
Borough: Westminster
Perhaps John KENSETT is a visitor - a relation of Sarah KENSETT ??

John & Sarah married in 1782 so if John in the above marriage is a son he must have been born around that date. Thomas N b. abt 1779 is certainly the eldest according to John Snr's will.

Regards,

Dave

Re: NEWBERY family of Hampton Court

Hello crankypants,

Amelia's will proved 30th March 1832. John's will proved 22nd November 1832 which would indicate she predeceased him. Depending when John wrote his will if Amelia was a close relation he would not have mentioned her in his will if when he was writing it she was already dead. Also, if there was a son John one explanation he is not mentioned in the will is that he died before his father, ie before Oct 1832.

Thomas' brother James b. abt 1782 also married at least twice.

Quote:
1851 census
Hampton
James Newbery 69 Head Married Holder of Cottage property Hampton Middlesex
Sarah Newbery 35 Wife Married Hanworth Middlesex
James Newbery 7 Son Hampton Middlesex
Barbara Newbery 5 Daughter Hampton Middlesex
Sarah Newbery 3 Daughter Hampton Middlesex
"John Newbery had built five cottages on land in the Hampton parish known as “Four Hills”; he left this land, with its “cottages, outbuildings, offices and yard gardens” to his son, James."

Deaths Dec 1860
Newbery James Kingston 2a 125

Regards,

Dave

Re: NEWBERY family of Hampton Court

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. Yes, that would be James' 2nd marriage. I don't know the name of his first spouse.

I was wrong about Amelia. Her age at death means she can't be one of the children. She is therefore a sibling or cousin of John Snr.

I'm still puzzled by that marriage of John to Sarah KENSETT. One of the NEWBERY descendants says that Sarah in 1841 was living with a 'son-in-law' but Mary and Barbara didn't marry, Sarah married Wm SWALLING and it looks as though Deborah didn't marry a KENSETT. We need the death before Oct 1832 of a John NEWBERY born about 1780. That would explain why only 6 children are in John Snr's will.

Barbara in 1861 was living with her elder sister.

1861
RG9 458 folio 123
Hampton Wick
Deborah Sevie 72 Widow 77 Proprietor of houses
Barbara Newbery 69 Unmarried Sister Proprietor of Houses
Lady Henegan 60 Lodger Married Lady Buth? Place not known
Jane Smith 17 Servant West Molesley Surrey

Deaths Dec 1875
SIVRE Deborah 87 Kingston 2a 192

I can't find the marriage of Deborah to SIVRE/SEVIE.

Deaths Dec 1865
Newbery Barbara Kingston 2a 133

Please see what you can find. Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Re: NEWBERY family of Hampton Court

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. All I can think then is that John who married Sarah KENSETT is not a son but a cousin or nephew or something. I have only even seen mention of 6 children.

I'd say the Index spelling of SIVRE is probably the most likely.

The 'niece' in the census is actually great niece and one might be great great niece. I'm not getting into the BULLIVANT / SWALLING / NEWBERY marriages.

Quote:
John Newbery left the land and premises on the western end of the property on the north of the Green to his wife, Sarah. After her death, it was to be passed on to his two unmarried daughters, Mary and Barbara. The property on the east side, a “newly erected tenement…with the yard, garden, coach house, stables, outbuildings and offices”, he left to his daughter, Sarah Bachelor Swalling, and granddaughter, Mary Anne Kensett Slade.
Here is one to work with: granddaughter, Mary Anne Kensett SLADE.

Regards,

Dave

Re: NEWBERY family of Hampton Court

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. How does Kensett get to be a middle name for children with parents William SWALLING and Sarah NEWBERY ? Who can I blame?

Dave

Re: NEWBERY family of Hampton Court

Hello crankypants,

I have just searched Hugh Wallis' Middle Name IGI Index for Kensett for Surrey & Middlesex and only the SLADE baptisms are there.

I looked for a death for Mary NEWBERY but there is no obvious one in the index. According to the will she died after John so after Nov 1832. I don't have her in any census or have have her birth. I don't even know if she is the youngest, but if so born about 1794, otherwise born 1780-.

Regards,

Dave
