Re: Monica hall

I came across Mary Hall on my tree yesterday, and thought straight away of putting it on the forum, without stopping to think. I have had her and her background ,family, son, marriage since before she appeared on Ancestry, and before Ancestry had the 1841 Census online. I had no Ancestry records for her. I would like to find the marriage details ,(not on FMP)where she was staying, what she was doing so far from home, as I have none of her family in Hampshire. Also about who she married.

Thank you all for your input .

Re: Monica hall

Ellie,

I also have Monica Salvidge in my family tree, she's not a direct descendent but one of her sisters is. Not sure I can add much but I think Monica Pattison in Hull is her daughter. I'd also come to the conclusion that Henry Frederick was born out of wedlock. It would be helpful to see the marriage to William Pattison to see if there are any clues. Presumably he had died prior to 1841?

Not sure if you have it already but Monica, her mother, can be found in the Trinity Almshouse in Hull in 1851 (recorded as Maria Hall) and her birthplace is given as Marton, so that fits. The Marton Catholic chapel is where the Salvidge's worshipped. Monica Hall's death cert in 1859 says that her late husband (doesn't give his christian name unfortunately, just says the widow of --- Hall) was a Merchant Seaman.

Do you know much about John Hall? Early baptisms of the children say he was a labourer but I have no idea where he was born etc? The marriage to Monica just says he was of the parish of Swine. If all these records do relate to the same family could him being a seaman explain how the the family may have been down in Portsea at some point, I presume John had also died prior to 1841?

Re: Monica hall

Hi Jamie, I don't have death cert ,so thank you for telling me John Hall was a Seaman. I have had most of these records for a long time .I thought John Hall was born Hull. I'm trying to see if there is another Marriage record on line for Monica Hall and William Pattison.

23 Jan 1828
St. Mary'S Church, Portsea, Hampshire, England
given the ages I don't think it will give us much more info.

Who is your connection ?

Edit- the marr.does state Monica is single.

Re: Monica hall

Hi Ellie,

I'm descended from Monica's sister, Ann, so did a little bit of work on the Salvidge's some time ago. How are you connected?

I'd also come across the marriage you mentioned but was also cautious about it, with it being in Portsea, and then they seem to be back in Hull in 1841. As John doesn't appear with the family in 1841 there's not much to work with in terms of where and when he died, or where exactly he came from.

I notice Monica Pattison always gives her birthplace as Hull, rather than Withernwick. John & Monica Hall's last two children were baptised at the Catholic Chapel in Jarrett Street, Hull in 1800 & 1805, rather than at Marton so maybe they were living in Hull by that point?

The only thing I could think of was that John Hall's occupation perhaps took the family down to Portsea? But then there's almost 10 years between Henry Frederick's birth c. 1819 in Portsea and then the marriage you mentioned in 1828. The marriage record probably doesn't give much more info, I wondered if it might gives us an occupation for William Pattison, he's also absent in 1841 so not much to work with there either. Is it available to view online somewhere?

Jamie
