Hi, I know this is a really old post and it's a bit of a long shot - I am researching my family tree and I was just wondering if you ever got any more information on Moses Griffiths and the reason why he was the only one of his siblings to be born in Prussia? I also seem to have reached a bit of a dead end with this one. Thanks in advance.

Re: Griffiths in Prussia

Briefly. William Mulvaney was an Irish entrepreneur who developed two of the coal mines in the Ruhr valley of Prussia.

(Germany, as we know it did not exist until Chancellor Bismarck unified the German states).

On a tour of mines in England, Mulvany contracted William Coulson to open ('sink') these mines. Pit sinkers were highly paid miners doing a highly dangerous job. Coulson took 300 miners and their families to Germany. For example, the Stoves family - the father and at least two sons with their families went to Germany between 1858 and 1862, at least 10 of their children were born in Prussia, in or around Gelsenkirchen, and baptized at the British Chaplaincy in Dusseldorf, Herne-Bokum or Dortmund. This is usually seen as 'Born in Germany BS' BS meaning British Subject.

The Stoves stayed in Prussia until sometime before the 1881 census, by which time most had returned back to Durham and Northumberland. Some stayed, having married German wives.

In search of a better life, the Stoves then migrated to the USA in 1887 and did very well there.

William Coulson was back in the UK by 1862. In 1862 he was given charge of the rescue attempt at the New Hartley mine disaster where 204 men and boys died. Boys as young as 12 died with their fathers, uncles and grandfathers.

See wikipedia entries for Wiliam Mulvany, William Coulson, New HartleyColliery Disaster.

See Google search for William Thomas Mulvany and Gelsenkirchen.

Hope this helps.

David.
