hi

I have just joined the forum, because I wanted to contact a member who seems to be a distant cousin....very exciting.

I am researching my 3Xgreat grandparents - Mary Jane Carlton and John Ashton who lived in Sheffield. Their firstborn child , Lucilla Carlton Ashton (b 183 was my great great grandmother. I have some information on the family from the 1841 - 1881 census. However I do not know any earlier information aout them. The story in the family was that the family name was originally Carlos and that they changed it to Carlton when they came to the UK from Bilboa, Spain in the late 1700s. Does anyone else have this family story?

Regards,

Leah

and

I live in Sheffield so may be able to do some look ups for you.

Re: hi

I think this may be worth pursuing. The Ashton's as far as I can see lived on the Wicker, coincidentally so did a Carlton family. The Carlton's would appear to be cutlers so I looked up cutlers and trade Indexers. There is a John Carlton, Cutler there in 1797.If you look at Carlton under the apprenticeships you can find 2 Carlton Apprentices John and William in the 1730s whose father was John Carlton a clothier and they came from Halifax. There is another Luke Cornellius Carlton also from Halifax whose father was William and a shoemaker.

Might it be worth googling Carlton and Halifax and seeing what comes up?
