Smile English Ancestor

I am searching for the parents and grandparents for my great, great, great, Grandfather James Batchelor (1776-1856). He was born in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, England, married Elizabeth Bird (1780-1814) also from Bradford on Avon in 1799 and had 7 Children. Married a Mary Mathews (1778-1859) in 1817 in Braford on Avon and had 8 children. My problem has been finding the right parents as in my search for James Batchelor I have found him listed with different parents. Thank you from any information you may provide.
Kind Regards
Jeff

Re: English Ancestor

James married twice, first to Elizabeth Bird, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Alderwicke) Bird on December 26, 1799 at the Holy Trinity Church in Bradford on Avon. Three years after Elizabeth died he married Mary Matthews, daughter of James and Sarah (Redman) Matthews at the Holy Trinity Church on October 5, 1817.

Elizabeth and James had six children in Bradford:
Elizabeth (m. Ledbury) b. 1/26/1799
James b. 5/27/1802

now to look for parents !

Smile Re: English Ancestor

Thankyou Ellie for your help and the information. I have looked at a number of family trees for James Batchelor and they have listed different parent and grandparent names hence my enquiry. As he was born in Bradford on Avon it seems likely his parents lived there also or nearby. I am also assuming there probably was other Batchelor families living in surrounding area's at the time with a James in the family which may be why I can not find the right parents.
Once again thanks for your help.
Regards
Jeff

Re: English Ancestor

He was baptised 23rd Jan1811 parents Isaac and Anne which is why you haven't been able to find him. The baptism says he is an adult said to be 39 years old on Christmas day which makes him born 25 Dec 1771.

I've had a couple like this baptised as an adult, drive me mad.

Isaac m Ann Harvey 5th July 1767 Bradford on Avon, Isaac signed and Ann made her mark.

The only baptism I could find for an Isaac was in 1729, but again he was an adult, so I don't think he's your chap he may be from somewhere else

Re: English Ancestor

Hi Amanda.
Thankyou very much for your time and the information with this research. Isaac & Anne are parents I did not know about. I found Thomas Batchelor (?-1781) and Ann (Champ ?) (1711-1790), or James Batchelor (?-1801) and Sarah Harding (?-1883) appeared to be the most probable parents from what I have been able to research. Do you know whether they had any other children besides James, or possibly who Isaac parents may have been.
Thanks for your help
Regards
Jeff

Re: English Ancestor

I can't see any other children for this couple. There is a marriage for an Isaac to an Ann Self in 1795 Bradford on Avon, if it's a scond marriage it doesn't say he was a widower.
I could only find a baptism in 1729 Bradford on Avon, for an Isaac Batchelor an adult but no father mentioned.

Re: English Ancestor

Hi Amanda.
Sorry to see you did not find any further information. Is there any other options or places we can search to find any more information. This is proving to be a needle in a haystack.
Have greatly appreciated your time searching for this info.
Kind Regards
Jeff

One of the big problems is name variant with a very popular name in the area..

Whether starting with Bach' or Batch'...

If you haven't seen the surname index for Bradford upon Avon [provided by Wiltshire FHS] you can view it HERE Hit no. 22 when it shows.

Re: English Ancestor

That couple were Isaac and Ann Self married 1795 and their son Isaac b1805.

There are a number of Batchelors with or without the t in the Bradford on Avon area and quite a few in Figheldean. It's possible that the records haven't all been transcribed yet.
