Re: Stuck!! how can i trace him??

Hi
William Thomas in 1881 aged 5
1891 aged 15 Farm Lab near rhyl - RG12-4626-103-2
1901 aged 23 with sister Elizabeth 18 servants (coachman) in Lancashire
1911 aged 45 married to Sarah

Everything ties in except 1911 age. For whatever reason i think this is wrong and you have the right family

Re: Stuck!! how can i trace him??

LOL Dave.....i have that one saved too! I like that one....the chap who is head of the house is staying in Rhyl non his holidays on the previous census
so there is a Rhyl connection.

I also found a William Roberts aged 25 from Rhee (Rhll)...got to be Rhyl on same census at Prescott workhouse in Whiston!

Re: Stuck!! how can i trace him??

Are you sure he had already been married before he married Alice.
He was single in 1901, with Elizabeth his sister in Stockport. There are two records on Family search, identical except the first dated 13 Aug 1905 where he was Single and then dated 14 Aug 1905 where he was widowed.

Re: Stuck!! how can i trace him??

despite lots of help and advice from some wonderful peeps, i still havent come up with an more fitting alternative to my William Thomas.

I'm still not sure about his age. It does seem if he is the person in the family we all keep coming back to....it unlikely he was married before 1905 when he married Alice. But, if he were born in about 1865 as some records suggest then at 40 years old its very probable he was married before...even more than once!!

of course.....he could of lived absolutely anywhere and i have found many William Thomas Roberts across the country who were born in Rhyl/Flintshire. The family story is he worked with horses, he certainly did at a later date.

Where on earth can i look for clues??

Talking Re: Stuck!! how can i trace him??

Hi Everyone! Its such a long time since I have been on here....but I wanted to let you all know that I did eventually place Mr William Thomas Roberts to the family I had long suspected him to be part of.
Regardless of why his ages don't add up and whether he was ever married before Alice, I do not know....but.....thanks to my local Newspaper releasing archives last summer I found him!
Special thanks to davelambert271 we had found a possible for William in 1901 in Stockport working for a Mr Edwin Simpson. I knew Edwin had links with Rhyl as I had found him staying at a local hotel on an earlier census. I just had a hunch Mr Simpson would be a key player in my search.
When my local paper released the old editions to browse I searched for William......and.....seems he was quite a character! I found a story about him pinching tomatoes from a greenhouse, being arrested on Xmas eve for being drunk in the high street (that gave an address....the address of his parents on previous census), and being arrested for poaching ( he wasn't the last Roberts to partake in these activities!!!)...and... the story that tied it all together was a story about William Roberts, working for Edwin Simpson as a coachman who was fined for working an unfit horse. William had been ordered to pick Edwin up from the station on his return from a business trip in Manchester...gave Edwin's Rhyl address and Williams.

So....the hard work paid off in the end. I have records for baptisms for many family members and I have traced Williams father Daniel back to his baptism in Henllan Denbigh too.
My only disappointment is that I can still not find a record of William's birth or baptism. It now seems likely that his gravestone death age is probably correct meaning he was born 1875. I have purchased two certificates that seemed the most promising....but neither were him. The GRO conducted a search for me and they could not find him either.

So.....I just wanted to come and say thank you to all of you that helped me along the way.....Many heartfelt thank to you all xxx
