How To Trace if there are children from grandad's previous marriage?

Hi

I've just received a copy of my nanna and Grandad's marriage certificate after ordering it online (my mum could never remember the exact date of their marriage and I want to get married on the same date this year as I'm using my nanna's wedding ring!)

Anyway, very little is known about my grandad, he died when my mum was only 13 and she was never 100% certain if he'd been married prior to his marriage to my nanna. Their wedding certificate shows that his "condition" was that he had obtained a divorce from a Dora Louisa Shaw.

I have been searching the online records and cannot find any entry of their marriage at all and without that, it's going to be almost impossible to find out her date of birth, where she was from etc to even begin to establish if they had any children.

My mum has been desperately wanting to know for years if she has any older half siblings and I really feel like I've hit a stumbling block now

I found a record of my grandad's death which stated that he was 53 at the time of his death on 22.02.1961 and according to the marriage certificate, he was 38, and that was on 12.10.1946.

Anyway, if anybody can tell me anything about Dora Louisa Shaw or what date she married my grandad, Leonard Francis Evans, I would be extremely grateful.

Unless my maths is wrong a death age of 53 in 1961 gives a birth date of 1908 and a marriage age of 38 in 1946 gives a birth date of 1908.

I've looked for Evans/Shaw marriages from 1925 upto 1940 and can't find any. What part of the country are we looking at?

Yes, I edited my post immediately afterwards, noticing that the maths DID in fact work out

He was from Hackney, although he married my nanna in North Wales - but I believe they moved back down to London as my mum was brought up in the High Wycombe area.

I can only assume that his first marriage would have been down that area also?

I didn't have any luck searching through online records either and for the few surviving relatives there are on my mum's side now, none of them know anything about an ex, especially as the only relatives we know, are from my nanna's side (I've never known any of my grandad's family although I do believe he had a couple of siblings and the family were fairly "well-to-do", even having a diamond dealership in there somewhere!!

Any help at all would be appreciated.... I just don't know where to look without some more information on Dora...... is there any way I can check records for births where my grandad was listed as the father?

I have found the marriage of Leonard F Evans to Elizabeth F Ryles at Holywell, N.Wales in Dec qtr 1946 ref 8a 1198

they appear to have one child in Wycombe in 1947

Leonard F Evans married Dora L Porter Sep qtr 1936 at Edmonton ref 3a 2526.
I can't see any children from this marriage.

If this is your Leonard and Dora Had she been married before this or was there some other reason for the difference in name.

Elizabeth Ryles was indeed my grandmother and the child she had with Leonard, is my mum

As for Dora..... we don't know anything about her at all other than she appears on the marriage certificate of Leonard and Elizabeth as the person to who Leonard had obtained a divorce, but it states her name as Dora Louisa Shaw?

Perhaps she had been married previously and that would account for the difference in surname?

If this is the case, then you have confirmed the answer to the question my mum has been wanting to know for decades...... she doesn't have any half-siblings
