Re: High Oakland Barracks

Hi Nari,

The barracks at Mansfield could well have closed many years ago. There have been so many mergers of all regiments since the 60's, a lot of these places have been sold off for development,...

Re: High Oakland Barracks

Hi Nari,

The Royal Dragoons merged with the Royal Horse Guards in 1969 to become the "Blues and Royals".

They have a museum in Central London, the email address for general enquiries is:-

Re: Army Service Records

You could try The Royal Green Jackets Museum in Winchester where VC's from the 52nd of Foot are on show. I'm sure they will point you in the right direction.
The system of getting service records...

Re: Ancestry UK and Ireland records, for FREE.

Only 60,000 John Smith's? There are so many David Evans's; Evan Evans's; William Davies's that crop up for me, it's why I've done very little for the last year - Anc includes places that my ancestors...

Now I accept I'm not the expert on dealing with websites, but the hints that were listed for my 7; 6 & 5 great grandparents on one side of my family tree are now "NO LONGER AVAILABLE?"...

They're on their way, Steve, but it is the weekend, so may take a while, gives you a chance to hide? :2fun::2fun::2fun::2fun:

With that number to look at, it'll keep you out of mischief for a while. :2fun::2fun:

My bug bear is the number of other family trees with Davies and Evans whose births are so different from the...

I always said 'kissing the Blarney stone' would help you, does that mean you listened to me?:2fun::2fun::2fun:

However, unlike 'Robert the Bruce', if at first you don't succeed, give up and do the...

Re: Computer generated errors

The mind boggles, but there again, there was no real 'proof-reading' skill in those days. If anyone reported the error, did they, in those days, print an apology for the error, with the correct...

Re: Sorry

Whilst agreeing with the two comments above, the realistic scenario about tower blocks is very simple, there is no plentiful supply of land available to build houses that close to the city centre. I...

Re: WW1 uniform identification?

Hello Paul,
This year being the 50th Anniversary of troops leaving Aden, there will no doubt be some parade in your part of the country. If you google Aden Veterans Association, click on enter,...

Re: WW1 uniform identification?

I've read this with a lot of interest, and the only point I can add is - 'have you contacted the museum of The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers?' To my knowledge there is an active RNF Association and...

Re: What is your earliest memory?

Probably falling down the steps across the road from our house. I'd taken a rickety old stool to sit on and down I went. Can't remember what happened. Did it knock any sense into me, doubtful but I...

Re: Trees on Ancestry?

The links I have with the "Evans/Davies" syndrome are totally useless. Most of them were born in a variety of other counties of Wales, and all married to people with different names to my ancestors....

Re: Great grandfather's war medals

You will need to find any information relating to his actual service, i.e., which unit did he serve with, service number would be a major bonus. Without that, you are facing an uphill struggle. Sorry...

Out of curiosity, I came across the name 'Rimmer' in the Forces and I feel sure he came from Liverpool, but memory from 40+ years ago isn't perfect.
