Lewis

Hi ,Looking for the parents of Howell Lewis, 1871 census see him living with his aunt Anne Benjamin at age 12,1881 sees him with his grandmother Gwenllian and again in 1891 ,both born in Ystradfellte Parish, Breconshire. Cannot find a birth registration for Howell .Both parents must have died but not knowing there Names makes it very hard to find out more info.
Any surgestions on how to proceed would be appreciated.

Re: Lewis

Hi Chris,

Going by the age in the 1871 census he would have been born around 1859 approx.
I found this 1861 census that could be a possibility for him. Maybe someone who has access to the whole census might be able to have a look for us.
He is noted as SON so it will have his parents names.

Re: Lewis

That is a bit curious. If the place of birth is correct and then I would expect to see the registration in Neath Registration District:

Ystradfellte Brecknockshire 1837 - 1934

It's possible the place of birth is correct and the birth was registered in another district. It's possible the place of birth as per census it not exactly correct or the birth was not registered. It's also possible the age as per 1861 census is not accurate pointing to the 1858 registration. Rule this one out and there are three to choose from:

Births Jun 1860
LEWIS Howell Carmarthen 11a 669

Re: Lewis

If age in 1881 is correct then I can't find a birth registration that fits. Only one in Neath 1856 - 1867.

What does the image of 1881 say for his age?

Re: Lewis

The aunt Anne Benjamin .... assuming Benjamin is her married name i wonder if she was a Lewis beforehand or the sister of Howell's mother. If she is Gwenllian's daughter i wonder if the family can be picked up on a earlier census that has all the family on it. One of Gwenllian's son's would be of course Howell's father.

Re: Lewis

Hi Gibbo,,,he is aged 17 0n the 1881 census,,,so b 1864 .

Ann Benjamin was married to David Benjamin b 1827 breconshire

there is a marriage in Neath in 1857 to an Ann Morgan. This fits with the births of the children in the 1861 census,,and there is a William Morgan b 1833 in the household described as a visitor.

1861 census

david benjamin b 1827
Ann Benjamin b 1824
Ann Benjamin b 1857
Howell Benjamin b 1858
Morgan Benjamin b 1860
William MORGAN (visitor) b 1833

Re: Lewis

Thank you GB.

I wonder if Ann Benjamin and William [the visitor] are siblings and maybe the siblings to Howell's mother.

Might see if i can find a marriage for Lewis and Morgan.
