How do I register?

First of all you need to visit the register page:

Register - Please click!

You will then be taken through a number of steps as follows:

  • Read the rules of the forum, accept them and click Register
  • On the next page, enter your username (make one up) a password (make one up (please ensure it is secure and safe!))
  • Then enter your email address (please ensure that this is correct as a verification email will be sent to you!), enter it again,
  • then enter the NoSpam! Verification Question
  • This is a simple question such as: What is the day before Tuesday? (MONDAY) or What is the sum of 2 + 2 (4)
  • Simple isn't it? This helps stop robots or bots getting on the forums - protecting you :)
  • Then fill in the rest of the information, please do not forget to enter the Surnames you are researching, as people can and will search for these!
    When you have completed the form details correctly, and clicked "Complete Registration" - a page will show:

    Thank you for registering, ??NAME??.
    An email has been dispatched to YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS with details on how to activate your account.
    Click here to return to where you were previously.


    You will receive an email in your inbox. You MUST follow the link in that email before you can post on these forums.
    Until you do that, you will be told that you do not have permission to post.

  • Check your email inbox for an email from "Family History UK Community Forums".
  • If you do NOT receive the email, please ensure you check your "Junk Mail" folder as it may be there.
  • Next you will need to either click on the link in that email or copy and paste the link into your browser, and press ENTER.
  • If your email program will not allow you to click the link, either try to "allow links in this message" OR Copy the whole link and paste it into your browsers address bar.

  • You will then get a message in the browser confirming your account has been verified. Well done!
Please then login with your username and the password you chose

Why can't I log in?

Obviously you need to have registered before hand and have your Username and Password.

Cookies Blocked and/or Javascript Disabled:
Most login problems are caused by blocked cookies and/or disabled javascript. Each are used to store your login information. If you are blocking cookies or have disabled javascript in your web browser or use an Internet security/privacy program that blocks first party cookies you may not be able to stay logged in.

You may unblock cookies and reenable javascript by following the appropriate instructions below. If you are using an Internet security/privacy program such as ZoneAlarm, or McAfee Privacy Service, please consult it's documentation for instructions for unblocking first party cookies and enabling javascript.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x (option 1)

1. On the menu bar click on "Tools" then "Internet Options."
2. From Internet Options, select the "Security" tab.
3. Click Custom Level.
4. Scroll down to "Scripting," make sure "Active Scripting" is set to Enable.
5. Click "OK."
6. Click "Yes" or "OK" when asked, "Are sure you wish to change the security settings for this zone."
7. Click the "Privacy Tab."
8. Click the "Advanced..." button in the Settings heading.
9. Check "Override automatic cookie handling."
10. Click "Accept" under First-part Cookies.
11. Click "Block" under Third-party Cookies.
12. Click "Always allow session cookies."
13. Click "OK."
14. Click "OK" on the Internet Properties window.
15. Close all open Internet Explorer windows and then relaunch Internet Explorer.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x (option 2)
Following these directions will allow to work as designed while still blocking malicious third-party cookies:

1. On the menu bar click on "Tools" then "Internet Options."
2. From Internet Options, select the "Privacy" tab.
3. Click on "Sites" (If you don't see 'Sites' button try clicking on 'Default' button first)
4. Type in in the "Address of Web Site" box
5. Click on "Allow"
6. Click on "OK" to close
7. Click on "OK" or "Apply" to close.
8. You may need to close and restart your browser in order for the new settings to work.


1. From the Firefox menu select Tools / Options.
2. Click on Web Features in the left column.
3. Check the checkbox for Enable Javascript.
4. Click OK.
5. Click on the Privacy in the left column.
6. Expand the Cookies section.
7. Check the Enable cookies and Accept cookies normally checkboxes.
8. Click OK.
9. Close and re-open Firefox.

America Online Web Browser 8.x or later

1. From the AOL Toolbar, select Settings.
2. Select Preferences.
3. Select Internet Properties (www).
4. Select the Security tab, click Custom Level.
5. Scroll down to Active scripting.
6. Click Enable (or Prompt).
7. Click OK to return to Internet Properties.
8. Select the Privacy tab.
9. Select Advanced.
10. Deselect the Override Automatic Cookie Handling button.
11. Click OK to exit.
12. Close and re-open AOL browser.

I have lost my password! What can I do?
If you forget your password OR Username,
you can click on the 'Forgotten Your Password' the link on any page that requires you to fill in your password.
This will bring up a page where you should enter your registered email address, and an email will be sent to that address instantly, with instructions for resetting your password.
Check your EMail program for that EMail.
You will need to follow those instructions on re-visiting the FHUK website. You will have a new password.
You can later edit your profile (in your UserCP) and change your password.

If you have forgotten your username or password, click on 'Forgotten Your Password' link on any page that requires you to fill in your password - OR click here. You will then be taken to this:
If you have forgotten your username or password, you can request to have your username emailed to you and to reset your password. When you fill in your registered email address, you will be sent instructions on how to reset your password.
Then click: Request Username / password
Your username and details about how to reset your password have been sent to you by email.

An EMail will be sent directly to you as follows:
Please check your email inbox.

This is the 1st EMAIL Message:
From: Family History UK Community Forums
You have requested to reset your password on Family History UK Community Forums because you have forgotten your password. If you did not request this, please ignore it. It will expire and become useless in 24 hours time.
To reset your password, please visit the following page:

When you visit that page, your password will be reset, and the new password will be emailed to you.
Your username is: ??MEMBERS USERNAME??
To edit your profile, go to this page:

Please click the link (or copy it into your browser address bar), which will take you to a message on the site:
Your password has now been reset and emailed to you. Please check your email to find your new password.
Another 2nd EMail will be sent directly to you. Please check your email inbox.

Go back to the site and using the information form the last email, login to the site.

Well done!

You may then go to your UserCP and edit your profile and change your password.

How do I post?

Obviously you will be logged in to the FHUK Forums. Login here

Go to a forum board - for new members we suggest you post a quick introduction in the "Introduce Yourself" board:

To post a text item just click "new thread" or click "reply" when you are in an existing thread.
