I cant find Henry at all not even in the birth index, but on the FIBIS site (families in British India Society) under Madras Baptism Indexes 1860-1871 there is a HW Brereton year 1867, see link below. Wonder whether he is yours. There is also a marriage for Willoughby Thomas Brereton and Mary Louisa Beaumont.

Thank you very much. I would say you have found him despite the name variations. Looks like Henry was baptised twice as the IGI entry says 25 Dec 1867 Durham. I had found references to stuff at Kew but had not actually searched the Archives. I find it a difficult site to use.
No thanks, I have the early census records with Willoughby Thomas - in the 1841 census the name was transcribed as Brenton and in 1851 as Breceton.
In Australia Henry was a professional soldier also.

This is a bit odd:
Name: Thomas Willoughby Selby Brereton
Year of Registration: 1865
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
County: Sussex, West Sussex
That's an older brother.
Willoughby Thomas married Mary Louisa Beaumont 15 Sep 1864.

I am getting really confused:
Parents marriage 15 Sep 1864 Kurnool, Madras
Thomas b. 1 Jul 1865 Cuckfield, Sussex Vol 2b 139
Henry b. 25 Dec 1867 Medomsley, Durham Batch: C000692
Mary Louisa Annie b 2 Nov 1868
c. 14 Dec 1868 Madras, Tamil Nadu, India Batch: C000693
Ada Margaret b. ?? can't find anywhere

I've had a quick look at the moment not found Ada, was she born Ada or has her name been shortened from Adelaide etc? The record for Henry is a christeneing record not a birth registration.

Found a birth for an Ada Flora M Brereton year 1874 district Wolverhampton, death 1875 district Wolverhampton, there is a marriage in 1914 for an Ada M Brereton , but in 1901 looks like she is a boarder pupil (yob 1891) in the civil parish St. Chad county Shropshire, also there is an Alice Brereton boarder/pupil. Otherwise not found anything else. Who does Ada Margaret belong to?

Dave have you seen Henrys service record at the Australian Archives has his pob of birth as Kurnool India. Gives his height and colouring and next of kin. Found this on the National Archives at Kew, see link. Scroll down to the 4th one.

Thank you for looking further. Brereton is a very old and now common name and there are three main branches of the family now - de Brereton, Brereton and Le Gay Brereton - the latter two being in Australia.
I had seen the AUstralian War Memorial Bio data on Henry but had not looked at his service record on NAA. I've done that now. If the IGI entries had been privately submitted I would have said they were wrong but they are extracted entries. Therefore Henry was born in India and baptised in Durham.
So his mother Mary married in India in 1864, Thomas born in 1865 in Sussex, Henry born in April 1867 in India and baptised later in 1867 in Durham, then the next child Mary born in India, then the next child Ada born ? - no one knows.
Re this from the National Archives "Marriage settlement (attested copy) 1 The Rev Thomas Brereton, Bedford, Clerk (prospective groom) 2 Louisa Milbourn Dyson, spinster, 19 years ..."
They are the parents of Willoughby Thomas b. 15 Jun 1838.
